“Excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2011

I stayed here for 2 nights as I was working in the area. I stay in hotels and B&B's most weeks and found this to be one of the best I have stayed at. The owner (Glen) was very welcoming and informative. The room was excellent and spotlessly clean (loved the shower!). I will be staying again if I am working in the area. I have recommended this guest house to my colleagues.

“The best B&B by far in the region”

The owner Glenn has spent a lot of time and effort to make Upper Neatham a relaxing and enjoyable place to stay. The quality of the rooms is excellent, as is his cooked breakfast. Good local pub in walking distance for evening meals. Wi-fi, comfy bedding and a large shower heated by Glenn's sustainable heating. All you need for a good night's rest between work days.

I got snowed in there last year and Glenn couldn't have been nicer. He was happy to let me work there for the day. He and his wife then helped to dig my car out from under a couple of feet of snow to make sure I got home for the weekend! Not many people would have gone to such an effort.

“100% PERFECT.”

What a find!
Crystal clean room, extremely comfortable, up-to-date flat screen tv with all freeview channels, strong wi-fi available (£5.00 per 24hrs), nice big shower with giant shower head, springy-cushioned carpet, designer bed linen, great bacon sanies for tea (approx £4.00)....
What more could you ask for?!
The host was a top bloke. Always had a moment for a chat and was very accommodating....
There is nothing out of place here and you can tell that attention to detail is well taken care of. Honestly, even the gravel in the carpark looks like its been placed stone by stone...
Top marks to the owners for a perfectly, well looked after place. I had a great stay and will hope to stay again later this year...
I strongly reccommend anyone to stay here... You cant go wrong...

“The consumate Innkeeper, sustainable, quality, integrity, friendly.”

A gem. This little B&B offers a clean, quiet country setting.
We have been coming to visit family in Alton from the US for years now and every year we stay with Glenn at the upper Neatham Mill Farm Guest House.
The Hot water is heated through an advanced highly efficient boiler, Glenn harvests the biomass from the property. The story of the conversion of the building into a B&B is of itself very fun. His sustainable practices reduce the energy consumption and promotes longevity.
Healthy breakfast, high speed wireless, comfortable beds, clean and cozy.

I just read the review below of some cranky traveler who appears to find pleasure in stirring up trouble. Or she must have stayed at a different place.

Please disregard her little tirade, this place is great, Glenn has always been a great innkeeper/host.

I recommend this place highly, that is if you are lucky enough to get a room, be sure to book in advance.

Oh and watch out for the bunnies....;)

“He charged my credit card withoutm permission”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 June 2011

We stayed here for 1 night, initially i was impressed, yes the room was a little pokey and the bed was only a double, howver it was relativley clean. Te location is great and the sun was shining so it was lovely.

We knew the owner ran cider making courses and asked if he had any to drink. He said he did but would have to charge us for "tea" on the bill instead as he doesnt have a licence. The cider is reccommended.

Breakfast - quality produce was used, however the portion was stingy, the menu points out that you are only allowed 1 egg, you only got 1 mushroom cut into quarters and half a tomato. Instead of the 2 sausgaes that the menu offered I asked for more eggs, Glen went to the effort of saying "so that will be 2 eggs then".2 eggs are a little cheaper than 2 sausages! He only brought one slice of toast per person and when we asked for more it took him over 5 mins to bring another slice.

My main issue occured after we left. When I got home i realised that we had left some underwear items in a draw, I rang Glen the next day and his first response was "I'll throw them away shall I" Errm no, they were expensive items that added up to around £100! I asked him if he would post them and obtain proof of postage, he said he would. He checked my address and we said goodbye.
Today I have received an email of the postage recipet along with a credit card charge for the postage costs. As he had charged my credit card that was REQUIRED to confirm the booking he had also added his credit card payment fee to it! So Glen though it was appropriate to charge my credit card over 48 hours after we had left, without even asking me. I would have expected him to contact me and say it cost £xx, how would you like to pay?
This B&B owner therefore keeps peoples credit card details and abuses his customers trust.
Alarm bells should have rung when i spotted a book in the room that said "If you remove this book from the room you will be charged £25!)

Not reccommended at all

I would never post items back to a guest recorded post, without their authorisation – why would I?

On receiving the initial call from the guest, I provided two solutions, 1) Would you like me to dispose of these items, or 2) would you like me to pack them up and give them to your friends who were staying an extra night (they were having breakfast at the time of the phone conversation and I knew were about 1 hours drive from each other). The response was definitely NO on both options as the items were worth several hundred pounds and were needed to be used in the next day or so. After a little more discussion I was instructed to post, recorded delivery as a matter of urgency at the guest’s expense. At this point I understood I had the guest’s authorisation to charge.

I proceeded with what had been agreed, packed the items up which my wife took to the post office. She returned with a receipt to the value of £5.90 a tracking number and a promise they would arrive next day. To me this seemed a reasonable amount to pay for shipping valuable items urgently a distance of 4 to 5 hours by car. I charged the card, which was the preferred method of payment the guest had used to pay for the room, adding a 15 pence (£0.15) credit card transaction fee, knowing that due to the small sums involved this was cheaper than a debit card transaction or posting a cheque to me by 2nd class post.

I immediately emailed the guest with their receipt, a copy of the credit card slip and a copy of the post office receipt and tracking number, with the good news that the valuable items which had been left behind would be returned the very next day. The receipt showing clearly the only costs I had passed on were the material costs, nothing added (naturally) for packing handling etc. I felt that I had done everything possible to ensure the guest got their mislaid items back swiftly and safely at a reasonable cost.

It was 24 hours later that I was utterly amazed to see an email response stating that proof of postage receipt only had been requested, not recorded delivery at a significantly higher cost. I genuinely believe that recorded delivery had been agreed, and in fact would have been uncomfortable taking an instruction to do anything different for items of this value.

Make of this review what you will, it has totally devastated me and I am certainly not the chirpy chap I was 1 week ago. Please note, when rooms have had a full check, credit card details used to reserve the room are destroyed. As we were quiet the following night, the room was not completed until after our attention was drawn to the items left behind.
