We've just come back from Hollings Hill Farm in the Malverns and loved it! Staying at a Feather Down Farm is a truly unique experience, and at Hollings Hill, Austen & Faye are really welcoming and hard working hosts. Here are a few tips from our stay, which we hope may help you in your stay too:
Keep a saucepan of water on the stove whenever you have the fire on, as it takes time to heat the water and you’ll need a fair bit for the washing up, tea etc
When all the tents are occupied the water supply can go off for a bit, as it re-pressurises itself and the tank re-fills. We found it useful to fill up pots with water, so when this happened, we could still use the loo/make tea etc. It comes on again but it makes the odd gap seem less troublesome.
Buy a box of kindling from the honesty shop as soon as you arrive, as you’ll need it, and the boxes go pretty quickly. Kindling is the key to re-igniting a fire, let alone starting it. Bring old newspapers for starting the fire as well, and firelighters.
Sometimes, for all sorts of reasons, a fire can take time to really generate enough heat to cook. Anticipate slow cooking over the weekend – really lovely if you accept this, really frustrating if you don’t. It can take at least an hour for a fire to really get going. Have a glass of wine and some nibbly bits while you wait for that casserole…
The main bread oven: jacket pots take longer than an hour unless you stick them right in the centre of the fire. If there are party bookings, anticipate that you will be sharing the space too
Brought along a radio and loved playing it in the evenings and during sunny mornings. A lovely addition.
It’s really nice to buy some bacon and eggs for the first breakfast from the honesty shop – even though you may pay a bit more than you would normally.
We found the front flaps had big gaps at the ends – they need another loop! So we simply moved the cool chest and put the wood box + luggage in front of these gaps, and it helped to block out the draught almost completely. On colder days, other guests simply used the emergency exit (by the bunk beds) to enter and exit, so keeping the main room cosy.
Key thing to remember: you’re camping with some luxuries – running water and a flushing loo in the tent with comfy beds – you’re not staying in a small hotel in a field!! Go with the flow, anticipate temperature changes, that some nights your neighbours might be noisy – but that your chatter may also be echoing into their tent. It’s an amazing experience to stay in such quirky facilities in such beautiful rural landscapes and we would all repeat the experience again in a heartbeat – come rain or shine!
The wellbeing spa at this FDF is also truly incredible. You'd be crazy not to experience a hot tub + sauna in a field overlooking the wonderful Malvern fields. Congratulations Austen & Faye on a great business well run. Just loved it.
