“Daylight Robbery”

Stayed for 2 nights 17/18 September for the Goodwood Festival. Never accept Room 6. Peeling wallpaper, dusty, grubby bathroom and pathetic shower. Booking originally made over 6 months ago so were surprised to be allocated accommodation in something they call the cottage. It actually resembled a garage and when opened up for us it was dusty, damp and dingy so my wife refused to accept it. This is how we ended up in Room 6. There would have been no possibillity of obtaining accommodation elsewhere because of the Goodwood Festival. The hotel had a function on night of 17 September so dinner was served in a type of breakfast room not the Tiffany Restaurant we were expecting. The kitchen entrance was off this breakfast room and for most of the time we were dining there were catering staff rushing past the diners carrying trays of food into the party. Not exactly imtimate. A complimentary drink was offered presumably to placate those expecting to have been in Tiffanys. The food was actually good as was the service. Whoever is the proprietor needs to get their act together and bring the bedrooms up to standard. Would not dream of ever setting foot in the place again!

Room Tip: Can only go by Room 6 which was terrible - don't know the standard of other rooms

Room cost £100 for double room with breakfast but was not value for money at all. Room ceiling and window frame was covered in cobwebs. The carpet had not been hoovered properly and one of the cushions on the bed had dried drool from a previous guest on it. Breakfast staff were surly - got toast no butter so had to ask for it, likewise for sugar when got pot of tea. Had to ask for menu so we could order our cooked breakfast. The breakfast was good though. Wouldn't go back - so expensive for the standard of room.

thank you for your comments which have been duly noted.

The rate on the internet was a room only rate of £100, however this was upgraded to include bed and breakfast as a gesture of goodwill.
We are sorry that the housekeeping was not up to standard, in the room however this could have been easily rectified immediately if the staff had been advised of issues in the evening.

Please can we ask any guests that have a problem of any sort within the hotel to talk to the staff if any issues arise, so that they can ensure that the issue is rectified immediatly; putting negative comments on the internet when not previously discussed can unfortunately affect the hotel business and ultimately the staff jobs

“No complaints for this great find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2011

Had a fantastic one night stay at this beautiful find. We went in order to visit the Jane Austen house museum and the hotel was a fantastic accompaniment to this fantastic place. The town of Alton has some lovely shops as well that are not too far a walk away from the hotel. The staff were extremely friendly and the dinner in their 2aa rosette restaurant was superb and we even were given complimentary champagne at dinner. We stayed in a suite which had MORE than enough room and a beautiful view of the gardens. I would highly reccommend this hotel and this place itself to people hoping for a quiet getaway to a pretty place. Chawton is also well worth a visit.

Room Tip: The suites are a fantastic option!

“Traditional UK quality”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2011

I’ve been staying at the grange hotel for numerous times for the past six years, and I have never had a bad stay. I feel right at home there from the owners greeting and talking with you on a daily basis and the wonderful staff always going out of there way helping with all and any matter. I recommend this hotel to all my co-workers going to the UK.

“Staff Helpful and Friendly, Hotel Homely”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 August 2011

I have lived in Alton for most of my life, I have been to the Grange many times for parties, meals and weddings - including my own this July.

From a spotty teenager at a Christmas Party through to my wedding, the staff right from the welcome at the door are very freindly and cannot do enough for you. I have viewed numerous rooms at the hotel over the years and they were all what I would expect from a 3 star hotel, clean and comfortable. £90 including breakfast is a typical room price in Alton - This is a lovely location and not a travelodge in a concrete jungle!

Our guests liked the rooms, certainly one of my elderly aunts was amazed she got a 4 poster bed! Obviously like all hotels the room location is luck of the draw, some do look out onto fences or the car park, others look onto the lovely garden area.

I am suprised to read comments about the front of staff being not helpful, every single time i've gone to the Grange that is the first thing that stands out above all else! They are so welcoming even if you are just enquring.

The food is fantastic, indeed Gordon Ramsay has been here, as have numerous other famous people - just cast your eyes over all the interesting photographs on display in the foyer.

This was not our first choice of hotel, but after much thought we are so pleased we chose it. We simply cannot fault the staff, the food and venue is excellent, the gardens are well kept., And all the rooms we saw were up to a very high standard. We liked that every room had its own theme :-)

In a nutshell a fantastic venue for parties or events, and nice rooms for a stay in the historic and pretty town of Alton!
