Spent 4 days in Basingstoke on business and decided to stay slightly out of town in Alton. This Hotel seemed obvious choice for Alton.
First impressions are good, very big carpark which is free for guests, nice decorative entrance at the front and rear. Large comfortable and warm lounge area loads of seating in the bar too.
Restaurant was asthetically good, and comfortable, food was 'just ok' nothing too adventurous, I had the sizzling duck which was pretty boring, colleague had the rib eye steak which was good but again not overly impressed. Probably would try some of the takeaways if i stayed here again. Thats what we did on the other nights, there is a subway, an indian and a kebab house on the same street.
Breakfast was good, apart from the crossants, looked great but not cooked, all mushy on the underside this was disapointing on the pallet but not enough to ruin the day, cooked breakfast was very good especially eggs benedict and poached eggs on toast, im not hard to please.
The room was surprisingly big for an english hotel, warm and comfortable, I had a seperate toilet room to the shower room but obviously all within the confines of my room so that was fine. quite nice actually. Paper delivered as requested each morning before i was up so nothing to complain about there. Also the TV was great, loads of digital channels and nice hot chocolate to go with it!
View of the Alton highstreet was as expected....
In regards to the Staff i was very pleased to find that they were all British (atleast they were when i was there), no language barrier issues as you may find in hotels closer to London. The staff were all very nice, slightly ruffled male receptionist, but he can be forgiven for this as he seemed to be there night and day.
This is an upmarket hotel that is trying to accomodate all guests well, there were many other persons there that were obviously on business, allot of loan people having dinner in the evenings with their books and smartphones. A few couples, not many.
Good overall and not too expensive, would recommend but be prepared for a 30minute drive to Basingstoke if your wanting to get their for 9am each day.
