“Friendly hotel but nothing special”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2011 via mobile

Good location and friendly staff in the main . Very noisy room , we were on the ground floor and could hear every creek and movement above especially at 7 am when they were getting up . That apart it has a reasonably nice bar with various seating sections , the food for me was average . Nothing special . The service on the second night was poor , the breakfast served was in my opinion low quality . Looked like boiled bacon and overdone sausages . The food was fighting back all day long ! So bad , skipped breakfast the second day as we couldn't face it . Not up to the standard I have expected from a best western And hence overpriced .

“Extremely high priced for what it offers!!”

My partner and I decided to upgrade from our frequential stays at Premier Inn to a Great Western Hotel 'The Compass Inn'. Well, let me tell you, there was nothing great about this hotel! We had vouchers for £90 and paid a £136 for two nights on top of the vouchers. We even upgraded for £20 to a Superior room.
When we arrived the hotel seemed beautiful from the outside and definitely the cosy type of country retreat it implicated on it's website, but rooms shown on website were certainly not the room that we stayed in!! Completely outdated decor, cheap lamps probably bought in Wilkinsons ( no disrespect to wilkos). Old, disgusting curtains. Green wallpaper and green carpet. Shabby cupboard etc. the bathroom was even worse! Blue cloud wallpaper, cheap bin, shower attached to bath-not seperate, floor reminiscent of public toilets and pubic hairs in the bath!! Even the shampoos supplied were certainly not of any luxury. There were also no leaflets or brochures on things to do either.
we asked to speak to the Manager and he wouldn't even see us face to face, only spoke on the phone in an aggressive manner. He asked us 'What were you expecting?' We also wanted to know what made our room 'superior'? we were told our room was quieter!! Well actaully it wasn't quiet at all. Constant door slamming and we could here footsteps above.
We have stayed in many hotels and usually Premier Inns and this hotel was not even comparable to a Premier Inn, which would have been half the price. For the price you at least expect modern decor and reasonably luxurious touches, but this was not the case. The management were unprofessional and rude by not speaking to us in person and by being completely dismissive of our concerns. We were polite and simply wanted to know how our room was classed as supuperior.
I do not recommend you to stay here unless you have money to throw away. Save your moneya nd stay in a Premier Inn.

Room Tip: Don't go there!!

“A weekend break at Best Western, Tormarton”

Nothing fancy here but well situated for Bath, Bristol and the Cotswolds this was a clean comfortable no frills hotel that still exuded a family run atmosphere. Our room was comfortable and clean with all of the basics you could want. Beakfast was very typical but well presented and all of the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Pay extra for a quiet room with a view

“Tired and overpriced”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2011

We needed a room for one night as we were going to a party nearby. I specifically asked for a quiet room, as I knew we'd be returning late and would want a lie-in. The receptionist agreed to give us a room at the end of the corridor at the back of the hotel.

So imagine how annoyed I was when a mechanical digger started work below our window at 8am the following morning (a Saturday too). Then at 8.40am, housekeeping knocked on the door and woke me up again.

The decor was extremely tired and dated, the bathroom fan was maddeningly loud and the shower pump even louder. I ended up brushing my teeth in the dark because I didn't want to turn the light on and activate the fan. No water glasses, just those horrible see-through plastic cups wrapped in film.

Breakfast wasn't freshly cooked but was sitting in warming dishes. The coffee was grey.

There were no newspapers available to read over breakfast and I was told that the nearest shop in which I could buy them was 5 miles away. The only redeeming feature was that a member of staff overheard my conversation and volunteered to drive off and buy me one as she wanted one for herself.

At £74 a night without breakfast, this hotel is poor value. It badly needs a revamp.

“very basic”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2011

Location of this hotel is good for seeing Bath,Wells, etc.
Rooms are very dated, torn wallpaper, stained carpets,1970's style TV,generally the hotel is in need of some TLC.
Breakfast service was terrible, badly presented, and what looked like un-cooked sausages, mouldy fruit, warm yogurts, warm milk for cereal.
Breakfast is charged at £10 for a childs breakfast.
The hotel has a lot of potential, but its not used to its best advantage.
