“Typical country hotel/pub”

The hotel was what we thought it would be a very old converted building, attractive and in keeping with the area. It is on a road but during our two night stay the traffic did not bother us at all. The room was spacious and had tea and coffee making facilities but does need at the very least their bathrooms updating and new carpets. The carpets in the hall are very tired and dirty. Having said that the staff are very friendly and the bar is quite livey in the evenings which having spent the day in Eastbourne was a very nice atmosphere to come back to and enjoy a beverage or two! It is true that you can hear everyone's movement but as this was at a civilised time it was not a problem for us. One thing I would say is that the food in the restaurant in the evening is overpriced for the calibre. We paid £21.95 for two courses of what I thought was fairly mundane food. My other half orderd crispy pork and it was not crispy at all ! Have your meal in the bar. The bar food we saw being served looked very good and was reasonably priced. All in all I think for the money and the staff its not a bad place to stay at all. We enjoyed the experience.

“Tacky and tired”

We were down in Sussex for a three day weekend and spent 2 in an amazing B&B near Polegate. I fancied moving on to try somewhere new on the last night and so booked the Priory Court Hotel. They sounded super friendly on the 'phone which I thought was a great sign.
I have to say that I regretted booking tho'. It is essentially a pub with rooms above. The property is on a road, and half the bedrooms face it. There are no non-smoking rooms. We took an en-suite double that was tiny and with very tired decoration. The bed was comfy, but unfortunately every time someone shut a door the whole hotel reverberated.
And it was so prescriptive: breakfast only between 8-9 (on a bank holiday Sunday!). If you are checking out before 9 you must pay the night before. Check out by 10h00.
Really tacky place, smelt of stale cooking and cost £75 for the room. Sadly I wish I'd booked the Travellodge in Eastbourne. It at least looked clean.
There are so many nicer places in Sussex (Pevensey is not that great either), please don't stay at the Priory Court.

We had an excellent time at this hotel. Breakfast and dinner were both delicious. Staff was very friendly. Location was fantastic for area. Travelling with our two small children, we had a family room which was nice. Would definately recommend.

“Misled”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2004

The 17th century hotel sits just yards from the beautiful and fascinating ruins of Pevensey castle.

Pevensey is a lovely little village 10 minutes drive from Eastbourne and five minutes from the sea.

The hotel itself is well kept and cosy, with a snug bar in keeping with several original 17th century features.

My girlfriend and I had planned a quite weekend away and The Priory Court Hotel seemed ideal.

Our room was basic but comfortabe. One problem was the fact we were above the kitchen, so we had to listen to the drone of extractor fans until the cooking stopped.

I was not told about that particular feature when booking.

But the en-suite - which consisted of just a toilet and shower - was clean and the bed comfortable.

We didn't eat in the restaurant the first night opting for bar snacks instead, which were inexepensive and of good quality.

The hotel owners were friendly and appeared helpful.

However it became apparent the following day that we were the only guests staying at the hotel.

We later found out the nine remaining rooms had been pre-booked by a wedding party, a fact proprietor Jerry Watson had neglected to tell me during booking.

So on our first full day we endured children banging on our door, a woman opening our door with a key and entering the room, screaming, swearing and the stench of heavy cigarette smoke.

We asked for compensation because our weekend had been ruined, to which Mr Watson replied: "I'm not arguing a toss."

When we suggested we were in an impossible situation because we wouldn't be able to get a room elsewhere that late he said: "Why not? The town's not full."

Obviuousy we packed our bags and left, the weekend ruined by an individual who in my opinion had little regard for two guests over the 100 he had downstairs.

Mr Watson argued he had said there was a 'function' on when our room was booked. At no point during booking had he said it was a wedding or warned large numbers of people would be occupying the small hotel, which boasts of its 'relaxing' atmosphere on its own website.

The bottom line is the hotel is nice but the courtesy of one its owners is severely lacking.

Our quite weekend was ruined and our money wasted.
We will not go back.
