“Warm welcome, attention to detail, good food and lovely surroundings”

We spent three very pleasant nights here just before Christmas.
We were made very welcome, with detailed queries as to our likes and dislikes, a real personal touch.
Rooms have been recently redecorated and modernised and the landlady's excellent taste is evident in the decor here and in the restaurant and bar downstairs. Some of the rooms aren't huge - but they are very comfortable and good value for money.
Despite being in a pub in the run up to Christmas, the rooms were quiet.
Restaurant food is very good and the service is efficient and friendly.
The Rose and Crown has a great atmosphere. Burwash is a very pretty historic small town with many nearby places of interest and a great location. Perfect for a short break.!

“Xmas party to remember!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2010

I had my staff xmas party here in mid December. There are only 6 of us in our London office and we wanted to get out of the city. We needed somewhere with accommodation and the Rose and Crown looked perfect. The staff and landlord were all very friendly and helpful. My room was fine, a little dated but clean. The landlord explained that all rooms are being refurbished and showed us the first finished one. It looked really nice and modern. Unfortunately my boss selfishly claimed this room for himself! The beer was fantastic, we had several pints to make absolutely sure. The evening meal didn’t disappoint either. The food was of a very high standard and perfectly reasonably priced. The pub filled up with locals and had a really friendly atmosphere as the evening went on. The next morning we had the option of continental or cooked breakfast. The cooked was perfect to help ease my hangover. I have since been back for dinner with my girlfriend who also loved it; and a colleague is planning to cycle there with some friends when the weather warms up a bit. We hope to go back soon.

“Lovely pub, friendly staff and locals”

We has stayed here last year and were interested to see how it was faring under the new management. We were pleased to find that the evening meals were as excellent as before, although the over large portions prevented me having dessert ! I often wonder why so many pubs give huge main courses as they therefore preclude a further money making order of dessert and cheese ! The only small criticism we had was the insistance by all the staff on knowing the day before exactly what time we would need breakfast and whether we wanted continental (included) or full English ( only £6 extra) . Part of the appeal of a leisure break is getting up when you want and eating what you feel like at the time -it felt very awkward to say exactly what time we would eat. Why not specify breakfast at say "between 8 and 10" and leave it to the morning ? Having said that, my husband had full English one morning and it was HUGE - so terrific value if you want to eat a lot for breakfast. Overall though, a lovely pub, with plenty of interesting places to visit locally in beautiful Kent and Sussex counrtyside - excellent Harvey's beer too ! The rooms are small, but very clean - great value for £64 a night .

“Cozy and friendly village pub with excellent food and beer.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 July 2009

It's a very pretty, 18th century village pub, set back from the main road.

Low beams in the bar mean you need to keep your head down at times, but add to the cozy atmosphere, as does the lack of games machines and one armed bandits.

Full range of Harveys beers on handpump, and the Sussex Bitter was in excellent condition.

The restaurant menu has something to suit everyone, and is not too expensive with most main courses in the £8 to £13 range. The skate wings and rack of lamb were very good.

The bedroom was quite small as you would expect in a building of this age, but it was clean, the beds were comfortable and there was a TV and Tea making facility.

The full english breakfast was a delight, and very filling, but there were plenty of alternatives available on request, and the scrambled eggs, bacon and tomatoes was a more manageable feast.

Overall it was a very comfortable base for exploring the area from, and nice to be able to come back and relax in the bar knowing that good food and ale were on hand..... with good 'local' pub atmostphere...at reasonable prices.

It's convenient for exploring Tunbridge Wells, Rye, Hastings, and Romney Marsh is not too far away either. Rudyard Kiplings house 'Batemans' is only a couple of miles away and that is well worth a visit.

“What a shame, it could have been perfect!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 May 2009

On first impressions the room looked fine, clean and bright, if a little tight. When we arrived the hosts hospitality and friendliness cannot be faulted. Unfortunately I don't think anyone running this B&B has ever spent a night in Room1 as a guest. The finish of deco and furnishing is excellent, the bed comfortable and everything very clean, with a little more thought it would be great. Firstly in the very tight shower and wc a hook for a towel would be nice. In the room a chair to put your day cloths or even a hook to hang them up would help. The half seized Chester draws are quaint but not practical. We could have done with a "dressing table" type surface at normal height.
Finally the lack of coat-hangers, not actually an issue for us as we came with our evening wear already on coat hangers, but had we wanted to hang anything up, one coat hanger is really not enough.
We had our inclusive Continental breakfast, (as we had to decide the evening before if we wanted to have full English - at extra cost!), in a very pleasant and bright dining room, the toast was perfect, and a second coffee would have been nice but as we had paid the evening before I guess no one had to hang around!
