We stayed for a one night stay inclusive of tea and dinner - our first stay in this hotel, having stayed at the Crown and Swan previously.
Received a warm welcome and asked when we would like our tea served. After a quick (and very cold) walk into the Town, we came back to tea in their lounge area. The tea was excellent, a glass of very decent sparkling wine, elegant sandwiches, and warm scones. Plus ample butter, jam and cream, and coffee. The lounge is quite small, but clearly comfortable as we stayed there reading the provided magazines until going up to our room prior to dinner.
Our dinner from the set menu was very good - worthy of an AA rosette. The pigeon breast starter and Dingley Dell pork main, of particular note. We liked the in-house produced bread and ample supply of butter. The wine list was a no nonsense but good value listing. Good selection of house wines by the glass or under £14 a bottle, and the main bottle selection all below on on £20. We had an old favourite Grand Moulas, from the Rhone. Wine service is straight forward, as befitting a list that didn't include vintage details. I.e. they bring the bottle, opened, to the table, and ask if we want to taste it etc. but we just let her put it on the table. The floor boarded restaurant room, which also was the breakfast room, was pleasant, and service was enthusiastic and friendly. In all, a very good dining experience.
Our room, had a small balcony with table and chairs. Not a great view, and not used on a very chilly Feb day (just before the snow fell), but would be fun in warmer weather. Although not large there was a very comfy chair. I think on a 2 night stay you would probably want to avail yourself of the lounge downstairs. We did have an issue with the hot water - despite leaving the water to run for quite a while, as directed, it did not run hot enough for a bath. In the morning it was OK in our sink. Apparently there are some plumbing issues, multiple boilers and long pipe runs. If lack of a bath is a real problem, suggest you mention when booking - some rooms are apparently better than others. The bed was fine and we both had a good night's sleep.
The breakfast was exceptional. The fruit offerings were good, although limited, but the cooked menu options were great. As well as the usual full British offerings (with good quality ingredients) there were kippers, smoked haddock on spinach with poached egg (excellent), bacon on maple syrup pancakes (excellent) and Eggs Florentine and Eggs Benedict. The bread was again in-house produced. The best breakfast we have had for quite a while.
I would certainly stay here again, and eat here again. The character is of down to earth friendliness, as against the silver service and old world charm of the Swan, and trendy upmarket style of the Crown. All three hotels would look after you well.
Room Tip: Check if you will not tolerate ample supplies of hot water.
