“Mixed feelings”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2011

The Swan Hotel, Southwold, has an excellent reputation and the quality of its restaurant certianly met our expectations. The service, range and quality of food and wine could not be faulted. However, the same could not be said for the accommodation. There are no leisure facilities (gym, pool etc) and our small double room overlooked a dingey fire escape. The soft furnishings were rather faded and the once-lovely silk curtains were badly torn in places. On the positive side, the room was very clean and the bed was comfortable. The L'Occitane toiletries were a nice touch, but on balance, it did not feel like 4 star accommodation.

Room Tip: Avoid room 3 if you value a view.

“Reasonable hotel with a high price tag”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 December 2011

My wife and I stayed 2 nights in Southwold 1 in each of Adnam's sister hotels The Swan and The Crown. This review applies to both hotels. Both were priced at £160 B&B for a "standard room" for 2. Neither offers good value for money at this level providing accommodation that is small, modestly equipped and at (The Swan) or below (The Crown) average charging a huge premium for location and for being owned by the town's dominant commercial enterprise. Service levels matched the accommodation, as did breakfast. The Town has some excellent B&B and Guest House Accommodation that offers vastly improved value for money. We will not return to either hotel.

Our experience has been very psotive on all occasions that we have stayed.

The staff are friendly, attentive, smart and professional. The service was very good, the food was wonderful - especially the desserts!

We love it and will be back again soon!!!

“A Lovely Hotel, But Breakfast...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 November 2011

I have always wanted to stay in this hotel. It looks lovely. It has a fantastic, central location and it is steeped in history. This is a very traditional and refined hotel. The room we stayed in was very clean and nice, and the staff are most helpful. However, there was an early Saturday morning delivery to the kitchen (just before 6 am and lasting about 50 mins) that was very, very noisy. I thought it was building work! We couldn't get back to sleep again. Surely this could be sorted by an afternoon delivery the day before?
The room in which the breakfast is served has a lovely outlook. Sadly, the breakfast was rather disappointing with very over-cooked scrambled egg, dry and over-cooked bacon and burnt toast! This should be easy to sort out but I was surprised that the kitchen could get this wrong as it is something that they do every day.
Anyway, I am pleased to have stayed at The Swan and these are simple problems to solve.

Room Tip: Don't choose a room that is facing the car park and near to the kitchens.

“Good hotel if a little overpriced”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 November 2011

Nice hotel, good mix of traditional and modern décor. It was a little expensive and the single room offered was far to small so I opted for the more expensive deluxe room. Friendly staff and GREAT breakfast.

Room Tip: barter the suggested room price ;-)
