“Service a disappointment ... again!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 May 2012 NEW

The first time I visited this hotel was for dinner. We had booked a table and it wasn't ready for us (early sitting) so we were asked to go to the bar until they called us. We never got called! So we ended up going back into the restaurant and got shown to the said table. Because there was a function room full of people, it was apparent that the staff were not coping with both and an apology suggesting this was made. So this time we gave it another chance and showed up at 2.15 for lunch. We wanted to sit outside because it was a hot day. Waitress said sit where you want and we will find you. She didn't! We gave it 15 minutes and decided to go to the bar and order our drinks and ask for a menu. We then waited another 20 mins to be served! Once we placed our order, we waited 15 minutes (sandwich and jacket potato only) until a waitress came out and apologised that there would be a delay. This was due she said to a table of 20 for high tea. They were only just starting our sandwich which was by then 3.00! We finally got served at 3.15, ate it by 3.30 and went to pay to find our bill was incorrect and they had forgotten the original drinks! We told them and they altered it. It would have been nice if they had said that a free lime/soda and diet coke was on the house for a lunch which took 1 hour to come out and had not even been cooked especially. Very disappointed because we were looking to having a nice pleasant experience, and ended up feeling wound up and disappointed. We will give it one third attempt, and if it still shows these same flaws, then we will go somewhere else.

Obviously a good place when the staff have to concentrate on the one thing like a wedding, I just don't think they can deal with more than one thing at a time. Also the staff need to 'read' their guests and decide if they look like wanting to stay there all day (like a bunch of girls together) or a couple of people out for a business lunch. Unfortunately their staff were mostly young girls, with an obvious lack of experience, except one older girl who needed a personality!

“Fantastic Wedding Venue and much more!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 May 2012

I never write reviews, however I got married at the Riverside House Hotel last month and feel that it would be an injustice not to tell everyone how amazing the venue and staff are.
We wanted a relaxed, informal ceremony and reception and Ged and Maggie (who run the hotel) totally understood and were incredibly helpful. They suggested ideas without the upselling that some venues try to do. All of the staff were incredibly helpful, the days leading up to the wedding, the day before when they assisted with the flower arranging, bringing in various boxes and cases and the morning of the wedding. I felt awful every time either myself or one of my bridesmaids called down to reception with yet another question or request. The receptionist (Roxy) was so helpful, always smiling and nothing was too much trouble. She even helped to remove sticky labels from the bottom of the bridesmaids shoes. The professionalism and experience of the staff meant that the day went without a hitch.
The venue itself is fantastic. Recently refurbished a couple of years ago, the interior design is contemporary and unique. We did not require any further decoration. The interior also allowed for some fantastic photos.
The food was lovely plus I have also been for dinner and lunches prior to my wedding and the food has always been a very high standard.
We have been contacted by many guests since the wedding who were so impressed with the venue and the quality of the rooms.
I really cannot recommend the Riverside House Hotel highly enough.

Room Tip: We stayed in the bridal suite, it has a fantastic view over the garden and a huge bathroom.

“Couldn't have asked for a better wedding venue”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 May 2012

My apologies if this review seems gushing but my wife and I were recently married at The Riverside House Hotel and we cannot speak highly enough about the hotel or the service we received from its staff.

The hotel itself is very well maintained with a very stylish decor across all the common areas, so much so that we added very little further decoration for our wedding as it already looked great. The layout of the rooms works brilliantly for a wedding, with the main dining room serving as ceremony room, dining room and disco. The other areas (2 bars and a sitting room) provide plenty of space for guests to have a drink and chat while the main room is being quickly turned around. This is all without even considering the beautiful garden backing onto a river which served us very well for drinks and pictures (we were lucky enough to have nice weather).

The rooms themselves are very well furnished and appointed and kept spotlessly clean with the bridal suite bigger and fancier than the rest, what more could you ask for really?

My wife told me that the night before and on the morning of the wedding the venue could not do enough to help and made it special by making her favourite breakfast as a surprise, helped with putting the decorations up and were really interested in everything that we had oragnised.

The food was really excellent, the menu to choose from had so many tempting options it was quite hard to choose but we were well satisfied after our tasting session. We'd been for sunday lunch and evening meals a few times and every time it was really delicious food at what seems like a bargain price. Nor were we disappointed on the day when all the food came out promptly, hot, delicious and without mistakes. Many people complimented the meal out of the blue afterwards, so well done to the chef and serving staff.

Which really brings us to the crux of the matter which is that the staff were truly brilliant, from start to finish. Before finding Riverside House we had been to a few venues and enquired about various small extra things we wanted and generally been met with an intake of breath and "I suppose so, it'll cost you x though..", always as if they were doing us a huge favour and any change was seized on as a good opportunity to try and wring out some more money. Not so at Riverside. Honestly the difference was like night and day and requests were generally met with "absolutely". An example of this; I wanted a specific favourite ale behind the bar and whenever I asked other venues about this the response was that they could find it but that we'd have to pay for it completely up front or subsidise it all so they'd get it in. When I asked at Riverside the answer was "Sure, I'll make some calls to see where I can get hold of it", on the day lo and behold it's on tap, beautifully fresh and at a pub price. There were many instances of this helpfulness really lightening the load on the stressful job of planning a wedding. This wasn't just the wedding planner either, ALL the staff were uniformly helpful (and smiley too). Another example, we'd somehow got confused and told our guests to come down for breakfast at the time it closes, quick work with the girl on reception and "no problem, I'll let the kitchen know". It was all just made soooooooo easy. The real marvel is that it wasn't much more expensive, they offered brilliant service in a great venue for the same amount or less than other venues at a similar price, with NO creep of the price for hidden costs. Friendly, honest and helpful throughout the whole experience.

I rarely write reviews (unless something goes really wrong) but really felt the need to in this case, I've written more than I meant to but that's the impression I was left with. So, to sum up, if you are searching for a wedding venue, call up or go and have a look round, it is well worth the visit. My wife and I cannot recommend The Riverside House Hotel highly enough, we had a great wedding day and the hotel and staff were a significant part of that.

“Fantastic Wedding”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 May 2012

My wife and I had our wedding reception at The Riverside in August 2011 and thought that a review was long overdue.

From the very start Ged and Maggie who run the hotel were fantastic, they listened to what we wanted, gave us ideas and provided us with the perfect day.

My wife did most of the planning with Ged and they worked through things together meeting regularly prior to the day which gave us peace of mind that everything was in hand.

We have a large family and were at the limit of what the hotel restaurant can hold but the food served to a high standard without dealy at any point and no one had to wait to be served for drinks.

The waiting staff were great and all of the rooms were prepared well, clean and spacious.

The day went without a hitch and Ged, Maggie and Suzanne worked tirelessly during the day to make sure that everything ran smoothly.

The location of the hotel next to the river and with its well looked after and colourful gardens makes for the ideal setting for wedding photos. There is plently of seating outside and the patio has plently of room as does the area next to the river itself.

Breakfast the next day was lovely, overlooking the gardens and again good service and nice food.

I have nothing but good things to say both about the staff and the hotel in general, we regularly visit the hotel for meals and drinks and have never had a bad meal during our dozens of visits.

The party night are also very good and lots of fun. We have had Christmas day lunch at the hotel for the last two years running and will be returning again this year.

Hope they keep up the great work they have been doing sice the hotels renovation a couple of years ago.

Thanks again to Ged and Maggie for laying on a wonderful day for us.
