“Cheap ... but No hot water!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

We stayed at this hotel this weekend just gone. Having looked at the reviews on here we expected it to be quite basic, but it was even more basic than we'd imagined.

That in itself isn't a problem especially at the bargain price we thought we were getting through laterooms.com.

The problem was that there was NO HOT WATER!! Not quite the bargain afterall. Bearing in mind it is February and happened to be snowing this weekend no hot water was not an option. We let the water run for more than 10 minutes at a time and still no water.

We reported this to the only person working in the hotel itself and she advised us that she would follow it up as there had been hot water. Great we thought! We arrived back at our hotel late on Sunday evening to find there was still no hot water and no note or feedback from the hotel. We were still not able to bath our daughter or have a shower ourselves.

The email address we were provided for MJB hotels bounced so I followed this complaint up with Laterooms when we got back. The response we have from MJB (via laterooms) is that the person working at MJB hotels was the cleaner and not responsible for this and we did not do enough about the situation at the time for it be resolved.

You can decide whether you want to take the risk of having no hot water and booking MJB!

I can add the 'going rate' for this hotel was listed at £120 per night. It is little more than a hostel without a reception.

Ok , I got this room ( room 20) for £16!!!!!! Through late rooms, so I wasn't expecting the Ritz, although at full price it claims to be worth £120. Arrived to find an unmanned site. Checked my late rooms confirmation email and it said MJB would be emailing an access code. I had not received one so I called the number on the email. I had a response from Daniel who said he couldn't find my booking details and put me on hold asking who I booked with, what time etc, while I stood outside in the dark with an overnight bag, laptop bag etc. not impressed. He then said he would text it to me which he did within about 2 mins. Room 20 was advertised as having its own private entrance, well, I've been to Amsterdam a few times and all it needed was a red light!! A wall of glass and a door straight onto the street, immediately in front of the bed and shielded only by cheap (bent) Venetian blinds, which you could see through from outside ( I checked). GET A CURTAIN!!!!!!!. Next oddity was two bed side lamps with no plug sockets nearby, so I moved one near to a socket for some better ambience only to find there was no lightbulb in it !!! The other was the same.
The new roll top bath was lovely and clean and the water piping hot. Enjoyed that then settled for bed. I turned off the lights only to be blinded by the very bright fluorescent fire exit sign which I could not turn off or obscure. So I had to endure advertising for business all night. This is truly the oddest place I have ever stayed!!!!!!

“Unable to even enter the hotel room!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

I am very unhappy with the (total lack) of service at Abbey Hotel Wymondham. We arrived with the print out sent to my email with a 4 digit pincode. This does not open the front door of the hotel for which I was not sent the code. There was no staff on site to help. Some other guests happened to arrive and told us the code to the front door. We went up and found our room and the pincode didn't work.

I called the number for Danielle at MJB hotels who was not very helpful saying that "you must have been sent completely the wrong code." She was unable to give us a new code and told me to call a different number who would text us a new code to the phone number I had booked under. Unfortunately I had no access to that mobile phone due to my blackberry being broken. We gave up without ever entering the hotel room - and went and stayed at my parents in the next town. It was a completely unwelcoming and unsatisfactory experience.

“A poor shell of a once grand hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2011

Oh dear, where to start! We had trouble receiving our code for the room,it was meant to be sent via email. When i called the number given by late rooms there was no reply all day til evening when i felt the man on the phone was abrupt with bad manners. We waited all evening and had to ring again, turned out there was a mis spelling in email address. We had a code to get in outer door as there is no staff,no bar,no lounge or restaurant any more.Immediately noticed poorly maintained stairway to our room.We then entered code to our room, which was executive double for £31 through late rooms,it would normally have been £130. It was a good size with nice quality furniture, there's where the positives end ! Stained carpet, coffee splashes on wall, spilled coffee stains on top of kettle, dirty glasses in bathroom, lipstick on one of them, limescale on taps, only a hand held shower with no curtain or mat for floor, one spot light working out of the only two in whole bathroom, which was over basin,no soap, the bed had been moved away from the wall it should have been against as there were wall lights which were pointless without being above bed as we had to get out of bed to turn them off as no bed side lamp.I had no bedside table but there were three in room, four including one tv was on.Only one sugar in pot with loose tea bags and cheap coffee. It was a soulless room.Next doors taps made it sound like an earth quake thundering thrugh walls.I know in its day, many years ago this was a grand hotel with views looking to the imposing abbey over the road but now thats all gone it seems a sad way for it to end up.What a shame!

Room Tip: If you get a front room with abbey view, that has to be a bonus.
