“lovely friendly place”

We stayed here for 11 nights. We ended up here by default (because of a cock-up by travel agent) Originally we booked for Spanish apartments with activities & facilities for the kids, but the Spanish hotel was not as described. We opted to change to Crete. Despite the lack of organised kids' activities, we were not disappointed by Dia Apartments!

We had a great time, the room was spotless, bins & sheets changed more often than we expected by very friendly efficient staff. As we had a toddler & two young teens we were grateful of the chatty staff who welcomed children. The pool was small but well maintained. Nicos always made sure the sun beds were not reserved "over night". There were a mix of nationalities & ages staying there. Because of being relatively small, the place was well run and organised, Nicos and the staff were always busy either running the place or mixing with guests, which gave us all a pleasurable holiday.

If there is a downside, there are steps around the property which make moving about difficult with a pushchair or mobility problems, if you had no-one to assist you. The 10 minute walk downhill to shops, and then on through town to the beach is a bit of a hike coming back up in the heat, especially if you're pregnant! But it was fine if you're sensible. Cooking area minimal, but we ate out most nights as planned.

We would feel welcomed back in the future and were sad to leave. Lovely setting, nice views, nice breeze even though it was August.

Room Tip: Take care when booking, as some 1 bed apartments are split-level - not ideal for toddlers.

“"Great place"”

Have just returned from wonderful holiday in Crete. The Dia apartments were the best we have ever stayed at in Crete. The apartments are kept spotlessly clean by Gabby, (Billys wife), with regular clean sheets and towels. Nikos and his wife Gabby looked after the bar and general running of the place. Both couples nice friendly people.
We had a terrace which looked out over Hersonissos and the sea beyond- wonderful! The buildings are lovely- painted terracotta in colour with tiled outside staircases leading to upper floors. Lots of plant pots, flowers and palm trees, with lawn areas, all kept neat and tidy.
Didn't have a problem getting a sunbed, but as it was September, I don't think there were too many of us. Didn't have need of air-con as it wasn't too hot at night- slept with window open, but you could hear barking dogs in the distance!
They don't do much in the way of snacks, but there is a small shop over the road, or the bigger Spar shop at the bottom of the hill. You can buy all the things you need to do breakfast and lunch. One couple even cooked themselves evening meals- hi both!
We were also lucky in that all fellow guests were nice friendly people, hello to you all! If we ever went back to Crete it would be to the Dia Apartments.
Didn't find the price of beer at the bar too expensive- 2.50 euro for large beer is average, you will pay much more if you go to the "irish" bars in Piscopiano!
Apartments may not be suitable for people of limited mobility as they are situated on a hill, and getting to your apartment involves quite a few steps. Dia apartments are set in a nice quiet area ideal for anyone wanting to be away from the main areas. Having said that, its approx a 10 minute stroll up or down the hill to get to Hersonissos or Piscopiano.
Ate out every night. You could walk down the hill into Hersonissos,(more commercial with hamburgers and the like though there are some good restaurants), or go up the hill into the three villages of Piscopiano,Koutouloufari and Old Hersonissos. We had good meals in every restaurants we ate at, so go and try as many as you can!
Travelling on public transport is easy and cheap, you can get to Ag NIk for 4.10 euros. There may be a lot of people travelling, and as they don't appear to allow standing passengers anymore you may have to wait for the next bus.

“Quiet and clean”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2011

Stayed at Dia apartments in September and would recommend them to other couples looking for a quiet restful place at a value for money price. Although the apartments accommodate around 35 - 40 people on most days there were around 12 -15 people by the pool, even though the apartments were full, so always a sunbed available. The pool bar is handy but doesn't really serve food or snacks but the apartments are handy for making your own light lunch and the mini mart opposite has all you need for breakfast and lunch. The gardens are lovely and well maintained.
For those wanting to know the down sides we were in a studio and the single beds were bolted to adjacent walls, so there's no chance of pushing the beds together, and the hot water is solar powered so if you don't get an early shower the hot water runs out.
We enjoyed the 7-8 minute walk uphill into Piskopiano in the evenings and the selection of good restaurants is excellent with a focus on good greek food, we particulary recommend Patriko for the warmest welcome and best food. If you walk down the hill into Hersonissos you will find it tacky and commercial with a focus on burgers and chicken nuggets, but it's handy for cash machines.
We'd recommend Monday night in old Hersonnissos, up the hill to Piskopiano and turn right, approximately 10 - 12 minutes walk. The restaurants all combine together to do a traditional greek night in the village square and Sacha's did very good steaks.
For anyone booking independent coach transfers from the airport watch out as the drivers seem to confuse Dia Apartments with a Dias Hotel in between Hersonnisos and Malia - they tried to drop us off there and with hindsight it's only 25-30 mins from the airport so a taxi would have been better.

Room Tip: Room 303 is a studio but in a quiet spot on the ground floor with a nice quiet patio for breakfast a...

“Dave & June, A must come back to place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2011

These apartments are in a fantastic location and are the best self catering rooms we have stayed in. Nikos ( aka Anthony Quinn lookalike ) and the two Gabbys were great hosts and keep the place immaculate. Billy the night shift guy is also really nice and helpful. How anyone can complain about this place is beyond me? Best place to eat is without question at the mountain villages as has been said before. As you arrive at Piscopiano the Dionisos restaurant at the top of the hill serves the best steak ive ever had and the two guys are great hosts. Beware of the Raki its rocket fuel! Another must eat place is just along the road in the next village of Koutouloufari called Gallinis, a great experience. Beware the irish bars though, good crack and atmosphere but rip off prices and crap drinks. Go to Greece to experience Greek people and culture not crap English and Irish bars.Easy to get about on the local buses from just down the hill. We went to Stalis a few times for the better beach and just cost 3 euro 20 cts per couple. Theres even a nudist beach cove we came across, we quickly moved on but it was entertaining for a while. Theres something for everyone at Hersonnisoss and lots to explore so we will be back.

Room Tip: The higher rooms have the best views but its so quiet anyway so any room was good enough for us.

“Restaurants Piskopiano”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2011

Stayed at the Dia Apartments which were basic but adequate. Drinks at the bar pricey. Good location go up the hill to the three lovely mountain villages of Piskopiano, Koutouloufari and Old Hersonissos. Restaurants in Piskopiano were good,my favourite being Kostos Taverna by the church just off the main drag. It is run by two brothers and the food is Greek but excellent quality cooked with herbs/spices to add flavour to the food. The meatballs with Ouzo and herbs are delicious.
Davids on the main drag is excellent value for money. You order 5-6 plates of tapas size food and the house wine is 2 eurios a half litre and is good. Meals for two with wine under 20 euros.
For a special night out go the Gallini at the end of Koutouloufari for up market greek food. Pricey but worth it.
