I stayed in the garden view room, since there was no availability of the valley view rooms (being a 3-day weekend due to a public holiday which had resulted in the whole of Bombay to descend upon the nearby resort towns). I was sorely disappointed with the quality of the room. The bed was very uncomfortable. The room was spartan, which could have been better inspite of the fact that this is not a high-end high price hotel. So one piece of advice don't take the garden view rooms. I am given to understand that the valley view rooms are much better.
A positive would be the location, which is easy to find and not very far off from either the town centre or the popular hiking trails and viewing points. The flip side being that there will always be a number of people walking down the road in front of the hotel, resulting in spoiling the feeling of solace and privacy one looks for in such resort towns. One broad comment about Matheran and not the hotel is that horses are the popular modes of transport, since cars have not been permitted into the town since colonial times (the other mode of transport being hand pulled palanquins/rickshaws. Due to the large number of horses, there is a general odour of horse dung which hangs around the town centre, though not as prominent in the area around Lords.
Room Tip: Choose the Valley View Rooms and NOT the Garden View Rooms.
