“Pleasant and tasteful but hard to escape other guests”

The Verandah is a beautiful colonial style building about 15 mins walk from the main street. The rooms are spacious, well furnished and tastefully decorated. Staff were helpful and service was good. Breakfast and lunch are quite good. Dinner (continental) is not their strong point but it is easier to eat here than walk in the forest to town in the dark. The larger, lighter and, I think, more expensive rooms, are on the first floor and open on to the verandah. The beautiful, comfortable lounge is also on that floor. Unfortunately, although these can be great places to relax and read, this really depends on the other guests who are also using the shared space. In effect, your room is just a few metres from those eating and socialising. If you were lucky enough to be there with couples this would be ok, but we were there for two nights and on both nights there was a large, noisy group monopolising the area. It was virtually impossible escape the racket, you just have to wait for them to go to bed or go out. When they did, it was bliss! This would make me hesitate to return as, in my experience, it is the norm in India to have largish groups in hotels. If it were not for that, I would like to go back. Matheran itself is dusty and a bit tacky, and some of the walks are very crowded with people and horses. However, the walk to Chowk point was quieter and quite pleasant, with nice views, though be prepared to see a lot of litter.

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for your review about The Verandah in the Forest. Your feedback is heart-warming for the entire Neemrana family, for it is guests like you who continue to reinforce our belief in our philosophy of putting new life into an unused and ruined building.

We are sorry to learn that your retreat was disturbed by our other guests at the property. Although our staff is trained to handle such situations, sometimes it becomes difficult to monitor this. For guests looking for solitude, we recommend booking the Kapadia suite which is literally a jungle suite facing the forest. It is an ideal choice to spend a few quiet and peaceful days.

We look forward to serving you again soon!

Warm regards,
Team Neemrana

“A silent piece of heaven”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2012

The verandah in the forest is a tranquil escape in the hustle bustle of the hill station of matheran. The property is situated some distance from the station and main market which makes its surroundings silent and peaceful.
The structure itself lends to colonial times and have been restored beautifully.
There is a dining hall where meals are served or you can choose to sit out in the verandah.
There is no pool, or room service, no televisions or air conditioning but you would not need one as well. there are gardens and hammocks and small macchans where one can enjoy solitude.
highly recommended for a refreshing and invigorating trip

Room Tip: choose the rooms facing the verandah

“In Colonial Style”

Take yourself back to the 1800's British Era, think of the comfort, convenience, inconveniences, semi royal treatment etc etc. It was all there. So don't expect anything more than what a holiday back then would give you or don't expect anything less than feeling like a viceroy of that time. This place was meant for the British officers stationed in Mumbai as a weekend home. So as any Neemrana hotel would have it, they have given you all you can imagine to get as close as that as possible.
Each and every furniture, pictures, props - All correct.
Firstly, you need to be in the right frame of mind. Do not expect the swimming pools and games kind of fun. You need to be at a little more peace with yourself while coming here. You need to enjoy the silence and the time you get with yourself.
This property is located away from the other mess of Matheran. So once you enter this place you can happily forget where you are because the only people you see is the guests in the other 10 rooms and the staff.
The staff has the correct temperament to go with this kind of a place. Because you are in the mood to be with yourself. You want a balance of not complete intrusion, yet having someone all the time. This is well balanced in between.
The night that we were there, we also had the presence of the 2 partners who run the Neemrana chain. When we got talking to them it was really impressive to know the intention and drive with which they are running all their places.
I would really recommend the room on the top if you get it. Because they have the real Verandah.
Another very important thing is the way the food is served. Again it does not make you feel like any other hotel. All the guests are seated on a long table and everything is got to the table. The taste is awesome.
The dining room and the center room and the verandah are places where you can generally hang out. All of it takes you back in time.
Then of course since you are in Matheran, you have a lot of options to go for a walk and visit all the points. Which actually we never did since we were there only for one night. The best thing is the Mobile network is really bad.
I would personally recommend nothing less than 2 nights. The upper limit is as many holidays you have. But one day will be a little too less for this place.

Room Tip: Ask for the rooms on Top.

“Cozy, clean and classy!”

The Verandah in the Forest, Barr House, Matheran 410102, India
My wife and I stayed here during our visit to Matheran in early November 2011. It was a one night stay (Saturday night) and we were there not so much to see Matheran, but to get away from the city for a quick break and just laze. TVITF surely offered the perfect opportunity! Away from the crowded market place and the hustle bustle of the busy points, etc... (and the great reviews on TA) this place was ideal... with no TV, no mobile signal, it was just back to basics. Of course this also makes getting to and from TVITF a bit difficult. We rented horses both ways - to and from Dasturi where the parking is. It's far from the parking and if you land at the parking past 12 or 1 in the afternoon then you are going to have a tough time finding a slot to park your car. At first we tried doing the walk to the resort, but with our backpacks and more so the dusty trail, it didn't feel like a good idea. So we hopped onto two horse owned by this fellow Tushar (92704 68414) and his family. You can call them and ask them to pick you up from the parking and from the resort at check-out time. Very pleasant and easy to deal with chaps.

We spent most of our time at the resort lazing in the room, and on the beautiful veranda they have with a view of the forest...! Better known as Barr house in Matheran, it’s literally 5 mins walk from the famous Charlotte Lake so you can take a night walk to the lake when the day tripper crowd is gone. In fact here's a tip - be there on a moonlight night and for one day-night, enjoy the resort through the day and head out after sunset when the moon is out and all the day trippers have gone, when the points and sites are deserted and lit by the moon.

The room is - let's say authentic. We stayed at Peerbhoy. It's basic, with a classy feel. It's comfortable and the staff make you feel at home. We got our sit-down 3-course continental dinner served just outside our room. Each room has it's own mini-dining setup on the veranda... just perfect! The food was great, the service was excellent, the setting was gorgeous. By that time the trippers and their noise were gone and it's you (of course a few other guests, who choose to dine outside) and the forest. Very nice!

So while our stay at the resort and the service etc. were very all good, we had a bit of an ugly experience in dealing with the Neemrana reservation desk over phone after we got back. We had booked 2 nights and paid up and then had to cancel 1 night closer to the date of travel and these guys (Tarun and Umesh) at the Delhi reservation office said the paid-up amount will be adjusted against food and other consumables and the balance will be refunded after your stay. Fine… but after we got back there was no news of the refund from these guys for a while and when we reached out to them they said they had not received the details from the resort and asked us to scan and send the final bill on mail!!! So we did that (like we had a choice, then they overlooked the bank details I sent the first time and further delayed the payment till I sent the details again. So apart from this unpleasant final settlement experience the rest of our experience while at the TVITF was great!!

Room Tip: Peerbhoy is located at the corner of the veranda and that give you even more privacy than a room wit...
