Stayed two days, which was perfect. I loved it! There are many lovely things about this inn, and the surrounding village.
The owners, Mr and Mrs. Lal, could not be more charming, helpful, witty, and filled with intelligent commentary and great stories. Mr Lal showed us 'round the main house, pointing out photos, regaling us with fascinating stories of his childhood, his life here ,his father, etc . He is justifiably proud , and yet modest, about the improvements he has made. When we were there, some of the rooms, and the bathrooms, were being upgraded. To me, the originals looked fine, but Mr. Lal is the sort of person and responsible owner who is always trying to make it better.
We stayed in the extension, in the Windsor Room It is is a large suite with beautiful carved beds, sitting area in front of the fireplace, and huge modern bathroom.
We were able to take meals either outside on the lawn,,or in the beautiful dining pavilion.the food was fantastic and fresh!! The chef told us Mrs Lal had passed on to him some of her cooking secrets. She has taught her staff well, in the preparation and serving of it. The chef, kitchen assistants, and waiters were professional, and fun to speak with (especially with some of it being more sign language than otherwise)
I love the special touches at Judges Court--the old items, dishes, fireplaces, both original, and newer. Name of the craftsmen who carved the fireplaces and other woodwork, is placed on their work.
The town of Pragpur is marvelous. We were accompanied by a local resident, Mr Kapoor, wise, elderly, funny, and sharp as a tack,. He had fantastic stories too. He knows everyone in the village, from new babies on up. While there, we went into the elementary school, where the kids were fantastic, so full of life, and the local beautician, who gave me a head massage for headache (due to heat). There are other shops: a tea stall with small cups of delicious sweet hot chai, Lucky Photographers which has a charming owner and a phone for those long distance calls. By every shop owner i was treated with interest , and friendliness. i sense that not many tourists head up this way.I bought a pair of beaded slippers form the local shoemaker. If you go, ask Mr Lal to tell you the story of this 100 yr old man, and his former profession.
The neighboring town of Garli is eqally interesting,, with beautifl buidings and homes. Again, people were so , and frankly curious, stared in the local way, but ready with a smile. While there, Mr Kapoor introduced us to the local newspaper owner, who interviewed us about our trip, as Mr Kapoor translated.
If you leave the Judges Court property in one direction you are in little lanes which lead to the "town square" and temple. From the back gate of Judge's Court, you reach a sort of forest with a lovely "back way" walk into Pragpur.
There are two negatives only: the receptionist/staff supervisor, both when we arrived and when we left, was rather frazzled. She was not rude, but her way of doing things was in stark contrast to the relaxing atmosphere otherwise. I'm not sure if she was new, but she seemed quite disorganized. However, our dealings with her were too brief to haves uch impact on an on an otherwise delightful, perfect stay.
Also, I dont think there was an onsite place for guests' drivers to stay, which would have been nice--perhaps something in the onsite workers' area?
Thank you to Mr and Mrs Lal, their entire staff, the chef and kitchen and dining room crew, and WelcomHeritage Group for providing a wonderful place like Judge's Court. And thank you to our tour planner Tim at Indianpanorama for including Judges Court on our trip to Himachal Pradesh
