“Basic Rooms but out of the world experience”

Planned a sudden trip to Dalhousie in search of snow & started looking at acco options on tripadvisor. Came across this homestay & spoke to the owner. One conversation with him & all the fancier resorts of Dalhousie were dumped in favour of this homestay. Dr Bhalla appeared very kind & helpful on the phone itself & was constantly in touch so as to make sure that we were on the right track. A big thank you to him for suggesting an alternative route to Dalhousie via Bakloh & Balera. This route was extremely pretty with wide open valley & a number of streams, a riot of colours. One of the prettiest that Ive ever seen in Himachal.
Resort:
The resort is perched on a hill top & enjoys an extremely pretty & enviable location. The resort was full of snow, as was promised by Dr Bhalla on phone. Infact the location of the resort is indeed a blessed one as there was hardly any snow before or after the resort but the homestay itself was full of snow of the highest quality - fine & powdery & white. The homestay presented a pretty picture with all the snow on the terraced hills around - it was like lot of icing on a cake.
Rooms:
We were put up in the room adjoining the dormitory & infact even the dormitory was available for use. However we found the rooms to be quite basic. The room was damp due to the weather & the TV too was not working. The heater was inadequate although Dr Bhalla was kind enough to provide an additional heater. In the night however there was a power outrage & the room got extremely cold. Thanks to the otherwise warm quilts but we did miss the comforts of our home. The bathroom was also quite basic but functional. The geyser worked well. Dr Bhalla showed me around the homestay & I saw that the newer built rooms or the apartments were definitely better & appeared quite luxurious. Next time Im there I shall insist for one of the newer rooms :)
Food:
Absolutely delightful. Loved each & every meal/snacks at the homestay. The food was very tasty & hygienic & was extremely well presented too. The rice, the chicken curry, the bhelpuri was all top notch. Infact the olive oil barbecued chicken is perhaps the best that I've ever had. My otherwise fussy kids too had a gala time & enjoyed their meals. The vinegar chutney made by Dr Bhalla was too good & infact even we have started making the same at home :).
Service:
Again top notch. The guys were very hard working & sincere. It was like one big family wherein you can walk down to the kitchen to ask for anything that you may need.
Overall experience:
Was simply out of the world. This was one of my first stay at a homestay & boy what an experience. Having barbecue chicken under the stars amidst the cold wind & rain shall stay with all of us for a very long time. Dr Bhalla & his entire family were very warm & kind & my kids took an instant liking to them.
Value for money:
100%. It just cant get better than this. Very reasonable for the experience that they offer. Its not just a vacation or a hotel on offer it is a whole bunch of experience. Wonderful. I shall definitely be back in the springs. Dr Bhalla & his family are on the right path & have their heart at the right place. The homestay shall continue to go places.

Room Tip: Go for the apartment if you want your comforts.

Dear Guest , it was indeed our pleasure to have you with us in next to impossible weather conditions. We sure are glad that we came up to your expectations .As promised , to you regarding the Snow i am glad you could see enough of it . We really wanted to give you the newer rooms but seeing the conditions around it would have been very inconvenient for the little ones . More over going up & down for meals could have been cumbersome in such an adverse weather conditions .We are thankful to you & family for spending some quality time with us .Though you were a highly ranked Government Official , i am glad you chose us over all accommodations available to you .Sure looking forward to have you with us yet again in Spring as promised . My regards & love to you all . Thanks ---- K Bhalla.

“Memorable Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

The stay at Birds n Chirps is something that we will never forget... stayed at this place for 2 days in Dec 2011. Dr. Bhalla and his staff were very warm and friendly. The food was yummy and the place was away from the crowds with good views. I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a quite vacation out in Dalhousie.

Looking forward to meet Bhalla and his family again sometime in the near future...

“"Now this is what i call a picture perfect homestay"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

Hey all,
Our stay at Birds and Chirps Homestay was just perfect to end our 10 day Holidays in Himachal Pradesh.
Dalhousie is a quaint and serene hill station where the delightful Birds and Chirps Homestay is.
Dr Kanwal Bhalla and Aruna Bhalla are the proud owners and perfect hosts to this lovely property nestled in the mountains at panchkulla a lil away from the crowds in Dalhousie. The climb up hill to the homestay of 100 and more steps feels worthwhile once you get up here and look at the view. However this homestay would be a lil inconvienent to people with joint problems and senior citizens otherwise everything is just perfect about the place.
We learnt Birds and Chirps is named after their daughters. The owners take all efforts to make you feel comfortable and relaxed at their home.
The food at Birds and Chirps is simply mouth watering the best we had in Himachal.
The homestay has a dormitory best suited for college school and group bookings which can house close to 40 people. They also have decent sized twin sharing double rooms for couples and families.
We stayed in a twin sharing room overlooking the majestic mountain ranges ..it was simply magical.
We learnt that Dr Bhalla also organises group treks and night safaries in Dalhousie in summer. Our visit to Dalhousie will always be memorable and wish to come back in the summers to enjoy more of Birds and Chirps.
Kudos to the Bhallas for playing such perfect hosts.Cheers !!!
Love Raja and Bijal Padia.

This place is simply awesome. Checked in on the 2nd of December 2011 and it had been really good. Nestled up far away from the maddening crowds this place gives you privacy and beautiful, green surroundings. The food is simply divine ask Dr B about the paneer bhurji simply out of this world! The water served here is natural spring water with medicinal qualities. Lets face it Dalhousie is pretty limited if you want a great place to stay AND eat great food. If you can brave the 5 minute walk up some steps you will be ver y happy. Punjabis and Delites NO cars don't go right outside your residence so you will have to walk a bit - good for your heart hey??. Really don't bother staying elsewhere this is THE place. I've tried lots of eating places and stayed in a couple hotels and they were really mediocre. Good value for money. Great for solos, couples and small and large groups. They have double rooms and a huge dormitory (with cool coloured lights). Tips - bring some good walking shoes, some good books and some interesting stories to share with Dr B and his wife over chai. Most of all enjoy nature, respect mother earth and throw rubbish in bins. Enjoy!!!!

Dear Guest,

It was indeed an honour to have you with us all the way from the United Kingdom. I really appreciate that you chose to dump your previous hotel and decided to stay with us for a week. I am really glad you could feel the security and safety being a solo woman with us. I equally enjoyed your company as you did. I really appreciate the way you talked about this place. The main important issue with us is that the holidays need to be pocket friendly not pocket pinching. Looking forward to having you with us again as promised. Thanks K Bhalla.
