“Good value if you have a car”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

My husband and I were looking for an inexpensive but decent place to stay for one night in Columbus and selected this hotel based on price + reviews. The hotel is conveniently located at the junction of major highways, but is in a dreary and seedy-looking area that's pretty devoid of businesses other than one Wendy's right next door to the hotel. I would not want to walk around this neighborhood on foot (except maybe across the driveway to Wendy's) and there is nothing to walk to anyway. However, if you have a car, no problem as it's about a 5-10 minute drive straight down E. Hudson to N. High Street and the "Short North" area which has many inexpensive restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques and a few bars, mostly targeted towards the college students on the OSU campus also located off N. High Street. So if you have a car, you will be fine staying at this Holiday Inn Express even though its immediate area looks dingy.

Having said that, I felt that this was a better-than-average Holiday Inn Express and was nicer inside than other hotels in its price class at which I've stayed. It looks like the hotel is trying to compensate for its not-so-great neighborhood by being extra nice inside. We understand the hotel is undergoing renovation, although we saw no evidence of this on our floor (second floor) and there was no noise, no missing door number or other issues.

The lobby, breakfast area and public area looked like they had already been renovated, and were nicely decorated with some Asian/ Indian accents, and an antique telephone for the "house phone". I especially loved a lamp near the elevator which had an elephant as part of the base and little elephant beads hanging from the lampshade. I mention this because it's the first time I've ever gotten excited over a furnishing in a budget hotel. The decorator has nice taste.

The hotel offers a free breakfast which was very good, included hot items like cheese omelets, hot fresh baked cinnamon rolls, sausage, and gravy biscuits as well as cold cereal and juice. The breakfast room is big with plenty of space for lots of people to eat. There is no food service other than the free breakfast, however the hotel maintains an extensive list of restaurants to which you can drive, as well as places that deliver to the hotel (note: delivery is very heavy on pizza, Chinese and overstuffed sandwiches, as you'd expect with a big campus close by). The desk clerk on duty was very accommodating and helpful when we needed to locate a place to get food.

It's possible our room had already been renovated as the furnishings and fixtures looked clean and new. Our room had a large refrigerator and a microwave located in a bar area, in addition to a king bed, a desk and chair, an easy chair and a sofa. The bed was comfortable and clean, the bathroom was free of mold and also clean, and everything worked great including the free Wi-fi.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would definitely consider staying here again, especially for events on the OSU campus or in the Short North area. It's a good value for money as long as you have a car.

Thank you for leaving such a positive review of our property. We appreciate the time you took to write this wonderful review! I am excited to share your comment with the entire team. We're glad to see you have nothing but nice things to say and accenting some of the features we believe make our property special: our service and location!

Being right in the heart of Columbus and just a convenient location is also one of our biggest assets! In addition to being home to one of the finest universities in the nation, the Buckeye State's attractions range from a rich visual and performing arts scene to a renowned zoo, exciting sports, fine restaurants, and many specialty shops, outlets, and malls. Add to this a special-events calendar that rivals that of any other city its size, and you'll never lack things to do in Columbus.

Thank you for your kind words. We pride ourselves on GREAT customer service and it was our pleasure having you as a guest, and we welcome you back soon.

All My Best,
Nalini Agashi

“Another Holiday Inn Under Repairs”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 December 2011

This is our 3rd Holiday Inn where we've stayed in the past 4 months that is undergoing repairs.
We checked in with a VERY helpful front desk associate, Greg. He was the highlight of our stay. Kudos for your hard work and efficiency. Holiday Inn is lucky to have you for an employee.
When we walked into our guest room, fresh paint filled the air. Eventually, it gave me such a headache, we asked to be moved. Greg to the rescue; found us a quiet room, with no paint smell. Our next 2 nights were on our Priority points. Unbeknownst to us, they changed our room and moved our luggage. Greg got our keys changed and we settled in, only to realize the staff who moved our luggage did NOT move our iron that we brought along. Again, Greg helped us out again and went searching for our Rowenta iron we like.
The business center had a printer, but it did not work....Greg offered to print what I needed.
Supposedly to get the new "H" on the sign for a Holiday Inn means it meets certain criteria.
Just what criteria that is, I do not know. We have not stayed at a Holiday lately where we didn't need to change rooms from something, like disrepair, dirt, hair, or paint fumes. Thinking of changing back to my Marriott Reward Points credit card, even though their beds are too soft.

Room Tip: ask for a renovated room, not a recently painted one though

“Do Not Let The Picture Fool YOU!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 December 2011

I stayed at this Holiday Inn for business and I would not recommend the area or the hotel; do not let the picture fool you.
The hotel is only a few blocks away from parts of town, which an out of Towner would not know about until you get there and speak to people and see for yourself.
The hotel in under renovations, the paint and dust are everywhere, in addition to the noise. Please do not be impressed with the renovations, it is more like cover work tapping over things, everything is still old, with just some new paints and a few fix ups.

The young man who girlfriend goes to college in NJ was very accommodating and did his best to appease a platinum member, but the morning front desk staff total attitude, and did not listen when I asked if the management could change the ink in the so called business center area (which was really a table in a corner with a computer and printer).

The best of all when I was shown the best room with the Jacuzzi; to my shock, why was the Jacuzzi in the middle of the room in a corner with two corner mirrors! This left me to ask and ponder, my God, what kind of hotel was this before or still is now?

Overall, it is not a hotel I would recommend or stay again; they have a lot of work to do. I am still wondering how they earned their new Holiday Inn signed, there are a few standards that you must have in order to get and keep that sign.

Room Tip: There are none as of yet!!

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts regarding your recent stay at the Holiday Inn Express Ohio State Fair/Expo Center . I sincerely apologize for the inconveniences you experienced during your visit. As you can tell by reading trip advisor reviews written by other guests who have stayed with us, this is not the typical experience one receives while staying at our hotel. We are renovating our hotel with new carpet ,wall paper to finish this week.
I sincerely welcome any comments or suggestions that can help us improve our facility or service. I have shared your review with the entire management team and am working hard to ensure our service recovery when a guest does experience a problem, improves. Our ultimate goal is for our guests' to enjoy their total experience so that they can't wait to come back, and it sounds as if in this case, we unfortunately failed.
I would love the opportunity to speak with you personally about your experience and can be reached directly in my office at 614-263.7725 or 614.216.2752 Again, my sincere apologies.

“Near University and convenient to I-71”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2011

Booked room over the Thanksgiving holiday when my wife and I were visiting relatives in Columbus. The Inn is only a block off of I-71 and looked new, and it was clean and the staff was friendly. Not much of a view but it is convenient to I-71 but the noise level from the highway was negligible. We stayed on the second floor, with a corner room with a king bed which was comforable and came with 6 pillows which are marked soft or hard. The mattress was firmer than I like but I got a very good night's sleep. The room had cable TV with HBO, a coffee maker, mini fridge, microwave, WiFi and hair dryer. Continental breakfast is included too from 6:30-9-30a.m. The hotel also has an indoor pool and a gym but since we spent all or time at relatives we did not have time to check these out. The room was comfortable and clean and it is only a mile or so to the OSU campus. Next time we travel to Columbus we will stay here, besides, it has a Wendy's nest door and opening soon is a Family Dollar.

Room Tip: We stayed on the second floor, ice machines are located on the first and third floors so if you need...

“SCAMMERS!!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2011

I booked this hotel for a stay from September 30 - October 3 for the price of $446.75. After doing some research I found a cheaper hotel for half that price. I cancelled my reservation at the Holiday Inn on September 9. On their website it clearly states that you must cancel within 48 hours. I clearly cancelled with MORE THAN enough time. On September 30 I was charged $83.19. I called to find out if there was some sort of mistake and I was told that because it was a discounted rate I could not cancel without being charged for the first night. THAT IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!! DO NOT BOOK WITH THIS HOTEL. They are scammers and just looking to rip off the consumer. Needless to say I disputed the charge.
