We recently attended a hockey tournament in Cincinnati. Thisparticular tournament handles the hotel accommodations, providing a list ofproperties for each team to rate. Thetournament then selects a hotel for your team based on your ratings on theimportance of location, price, breakfast, etc…
Our team was assigned to this hotel and, upon arrival; wewere thrilled with the property. It’s a beautifulhotel with a lovely pool and stream full of fish and turtles for everyone toenjoy.
Our excitement quickly turned to disappointment and eventualanger when the hotel security appeared in the evenings and virtually harassed notonly ours, but many of the kids in the building. We heard tales of securitystaff lining up kids in the hall and lecturing them…and scare tactics liketelling the kids that someone died from running and falling from a balcony inthe hotel. The final straw was when amember of the security staff entered a cracked room door without knocking toyell at boys playing a game of knee hockey. The boys (ages 8-10) were told thatthey would be kicked out of the hotel if the level of noise did not come down. This happened in the early evening – long beforeanyone would be going to sleep for the night. They were appropriately terrified, some notwanting to come out of their rooms for breakfast in morning – fearing theywould run into the members of the security staff again.
I confess that our boys are not angels. They are 8, 9 and 10 year olds…excited to beaway from home and to play hockey with their friends and teammates. Lots of energy to be sure. However, if the Embassy Suites Blue Ash has ano tolerance policy for groups likethis, why associate with a tournament that will send these groups to yourproperty?
The families in our group spoke to various teams alsostaying at the hotel…all of them older and more traveled than our group. The consensus was that in all their years of travelhockey, they had never been treated as poorly as they were that weekend. I find this unfortunate because, with ourgroup alone, hotel collected more than $6,000 in the three nights we stayedthere. We paid a lot of money to betreated so poorly.
To sum up, while the property and amenities are lovely atthe Embassy Suites, the staff that handles the security detail makes themanagement and property look bad.
Hockey families and other groups with kids: steer clear ofthis property.
