“Very Good Hotel, Awkward Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

DATES/NIGHTS: 08/2011 - 16 Nights

OVERALL: Not bad, but there are better and newer options in the immediate area. The hotel is kind of dark and damp feeling in a way. And the exterior kind of looks like an old 1970’s era apartment building. There is a restaurant and bar on site and on Friday and Saturday nights it’s actually pretty full with people hanging out and dancing because they bring in a DJ. They also have an outdoor pool that moves into an indoor one that is very nice, big, and clean. The Executive Lounge is also very nice and they put out some great appetizers around dinner time. But the breakfast is kind of standard and not very unique. But if you are a Gold or Diamond Elite member you can get a free breakfast buffet in the restaurant but you might have to ask for it because it wasn’t offered to me initially and I only heard about it from another guest. But once I asked I was given some coupons and was apologized to for the oversight.

STAFF: Very friendly and always helpful. While I was there they management hosted a pool party with free food and beer for all of the guests that was AWESOME! But I’m not sure how often they do that.

ROOMS: Clean and well kept for how old the building seems to be, but still had a feeling of drab and can use an renovation.

AREA: Bad. Not the hotels fault, of course, but very congested and there was a lot of traffic at all times of the day. And when you exit the hotel out towards the highway you can only take a right turn, but a lot of restaurants are to the left so you have to go a round-about route to get in that direction. But if you do head east on Chagrin over the bridge you will find a mall are on the left and there are some great places to eat here. Try the B Spot which is owner by Iron Chef Michael Symon and you will NOT be disappointed.

BENEFITS: Free buffet breakfast, but you may have to ask for it. And there is an Executive Lounge that puts out some pretty good dinner food. Free Wi-Fi too.

STAY AGAIN: Absolutely

Room Tip: Ask for a suite for more room.

“Nicely remodeled, friendly staff ... weak gym”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

I stayed here a few times about ten years ago and it was dirty and worn. I recently returned due to a business engagement booked nearby, and a low low rate negotiated by my company. To my surprise the hotel has been cleaned up and the staff is friendly. Beds are fresh, new tile in the shower, new marble top furniture in the rooms. Breakfast is pretty good. Overall a great value for the price.

One downside... the workout room has almost nothing useful beyond a rack of free weights and a few treadmills & ellipticals. There are no weight machines and nothing for lower body weights. If I needed to stay in the area again, I'd be torn towards finding somewhere with better equipment. The pool is better than average but half of it is closed in the winter because it extends outside.

“By Far the Worst Hilton I Have Experienced”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2011

My husband and I recently stayed at the Hilton Cleveland East/Beachwood. It was a horrible experience. The only reason that I am not giving this hotel only one star is because we got the room at a very good rate. That is the only good thing about the entire stay. We had flown into the Cleveland airport at the end of our recent trip. It was a very late flight and my husband had to work the next morning in Cleveland (we live about an hour and a half from his place of employment.) so we decided to stay at the Hilton so he could have a decent night's sleep and only have a 15 minute drive to the office in the morning. It was a good plan at least in theory!

We knew that we were going to be arriving late at the hotel since our flight didn't get in until almost midnight so we decided to take advantage of the e-check-in that Hilton offers. We were assigned a room during e-check-in that matched our requirements of a king/non-smoking room. My husband travels a lot for business as well as our personal travel and we are very loyal to Hilton As a result he is a Diamond Member of the Hilton HHonors program. This status is supposed to afford you some perks during your stays at Hilton properties. Obviously that does not hold true at this property! We got to the hotel shortly after midnight. We went to the front desk and things appeared to be fine till we got our room assignment. It was a different room number than what we were assigned during the e-check-in process. My husband mentioned that fact to the employee that was checking us in. He didn't really respond to the question about the room just made a comment that this was our room now. Ok...so we figured it would be at least a comparable room to the one that we had requested and were assigned earlier in the day. Uh...no.....when we got to the room and opened the door we discovered that we were assigned a very tiny room with 2 queen beds. So we figured ok...no big deal...we were only going to be there a short time. Second problem came when I walked into the bathroom. I asked my husband if he had used it already. He replied that he had not....well there was a "floater" left in the toilet. Not sure if this was from a prior guest or from housekeeping but it wasn't exactly an expected or appreciated sight! Third problem....we went to get into the bed and the sheets were stained. The second bed appeared to be ok but honestly I was afraid to look too hard at this point! If we hadn't been so tired we probably would have asked to be moved to another room but again, we figured we just wanted to get some sleep. Well that's when we noticed the fourth problem. The room we were given was on the side of the hotel nearest the highway. This was the LOUDEST room I have ever spent a night in! I might as well have been trying to sleep ON the highway. I spent the night with the pillow (which I hope was clean) over my head to block out some of the noise.

This was the worst night's sleep I have ever had at a Hilton. The cleanliness of the hotel was terrible. The worst part is that if this is how they treat their Diamond members at this property, I would hate to be a regular guest! I would definitely not stay there again no matter what the rate was and I would definitely not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Room Tip: If you are staying here ask to be given a room that is away from the highway!

“Convenient location, friendly staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 December 2011

The Hilton East is a convenient location, which was easy to find just off the Interstate, yet far enough away so no road noise from the Highway, or major commercial artery, Chagrin Blvd., could be heard. The friendly staff and nice amenities, including indoor pool, free internet access, and 24 hour exercise room, were also pluses. The one poor choice on management's part was to charge for local phone calls(I think it was $1 each), which is not competitive with almost all other hotels we've stayed at in that area for many years. We used our cells to make restaurant reservations for the numerous excellent and varied eateries in the area, but it would have been more convenient to do so without charge from a room phone and Yellow pages on the bedstand, as in most of the many hotels in that area.

The one problem we found was that, although we'd asked for a non-smoking room, our room had a telltale odor of cigarettes when we walked in with our luggage on Thanksgiving Day. I asked the cleaning staff on the hallway why we could smell faint smokey odors, and she said that the floor had been a smoking room floor, but Hilton recently converted the whole hotel into non-smoking. She kindly offered to spray some hotel strength freshener around the room's bedspread, chairs, drapes & carpet, and we gladly accepted. While it helped, we noticed that each time we returned to the room over our 4 day holiday to eat and visit with local family and friends, we could again faintly smell the smoke until we were in the room for a while, and became accustomed to it. The hotel was nearly full when we arrived, so we didn't want to bother asking for, and changing rooms, since it wasn't a big problem, and we weren't going to be there for long periods, other than to sleep. I bet the problem will be cleared up completely in the near future.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that had never been on a smoking floor.

“Family Friendly”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

We spent Thanksgiving in Shaker Heights and stayed with the family for three nights at this hotel. The staff was friendly and courteous, and when pee wee football teams invaded for a Thanksgiving Weekend tournament, they closely monitored the halls at night with extra staff to keep down the noise that could have been caused by more than 200 10-13 year olds! The hotel was clean, with an ample breakfast buffet, and welcoming pool for the grandkids in the late afternoon to work off the turkey and trimmings at Uncle's house. I recommend it for your next stay. Very convenient to shopping, highways, with lots of restaurants just minutes away, and downtown Clevland just 15 mins. away.

Room Tip: All rooms are quiet but if you are sensitive to noise, take a room halfway down the hall from the el...
