“Avoid !”

We stayed here in December 2011 as part of a round the world trip and unfortunately was the biggest disappointment of all of our numerous hotels and apartments. From the moment we arrived and were shown the room we felt very let down. The staff kindly upgraded us to another room only to be shown an equally shabby room which again we turned down, the final room supposedly executive was our only option. The photos I have downloaded speak for themselves. What you won't see on the photos is the insects that crawled the bed. Neither will you see the bed that after lying on it for one night developed a large wet patch of urine (obviously from a previous guest wetting the bed). And with the weight had sept through. The only plus point was the staff did try to help and were very apologetic. Whoever the management/owners of this establishment are need to up their game and stop ripping the consumer off. The photos have been forwarded to the travel agent who will be investigating.

Firstly let me just let you know that customer satisfaction is the number one priority here at Castaways Resort & Spa and so reading this review has shocked and upset every member of our staff.

You booked the cheapest style of room in our resort in one of only two rooms that does not face the ocean – however our reception staff saw that we had some ocean view rooms available and took the liberty of upgrading you before your arrival. As you were unhappy with this room they then gave you a further upgrade to one of our two bedroom apartments – not an executive room. We are very surprised and disappointed that you were so unhappy with this room as we often told by guests via our guest comments cards that they couldn’t fault this room with its brand new fittings- stunning ocean views spacious lounge with comfortable furniture and proximity to our two swimming pools.

To respond to your complaints directly -had our maintenance and housekeeping been aware of your complaints such as insects and broken fly screen they would have been rectified immediately. Living in the tropics and enjoying all that this wonderful part of the world has to offer means that we also share our environment with many animals and insects – although we do our absolute best to control them, occasionally the odd ant or insect may cross your path – I can only apologise that this has upset your stay with us.

I have checked our reservations for that week and that room was empty for three days before your arrival I find it very surprising that their could have been a wet patch on the bed , our housekeeping team are appalled at the suggestion – however if there was an housekeeping oversight as you have suggested you have our MOST sincere apologies. Had you brought this up with us during your stay we would have changed your room immediately and reimbursed you the full amount –as a complaint like this is not acceptable.

All in all I can only reiterate how disappointed we are not only to receive this review but that Castaways was not the right fit for you.

“Ate at restaurant - great”

Had lunch at Castaways last week with a friend - spent a couple of hours having a few drinks, taking in the view and dining. The food was great - huge and really fresh. We thoroughly enjoyed the meal and would go back. The service was very friendly, but a little disorganised. All up, Castaways has prime position on the beach, pool and outdoor area are really inviting. I just think they need to take it to the next level of service and ensure everything is kept clean (which I know is hard to do in our weather and being outdoors) and they would have a gold mine.

“5 Star location but this "4 star" resort needs refurbishing”

This was going to be our ''spoil ourselves stay and a sentimental return. Given that Mission Beach was thrashed by Cyclone Yassi, Castaways Resort public entertainment areas are remarkably unscathed. We had a resort room upstairs with large sliding doors opening on to a balcony. The balcony floor was scattered with the remains of a broken cup and quite grubby. We'd had a long trip so I was keen to shower. Turned on the tap - cold water. let it run for a bit with no improvement. The receptionist got someone on to it and apparently the hot water was reset. 45 minutes later..cold water; next day - cold water. The towels were rough enough to use for exfoliation. The bathroom was outdated and the bath badly stained. My husband complained that there was no free internet to the room. The bed was wonderfully comfy. We breakfasted with an acquaintance we'd bumped into and he said "Lovely spot. But cold showers." The service at reception, bar and restaurant was wonderful. We chose to eat dinner in the restaurant and were told that the fish was Mangrove jack. It wasn't and had obviously been frozen. It was dry and tough and quite inedible. The chocolate fondant dessert however was perfection. At $200 per night (discounted) hot water, good towels and free internet should be a given. Apart from the public entertainment areas the resort is badly in need of updating and refurbishing,

Room Tip: away from the pool area

Thanks very much for taking the time to review us in Trip Advisor. I am sincerely sorry that your stay coincided with the weekend we had the hot water issues. Our maintenance team fixed the problem as soon as they could and I assure you that if you choose to stay with us again the water will be piping hot. I have passed over your issues to the relevant departments who I am sure will take them into consideration. We are continually striving to offer a better experience at Castaways so all suggestions are helpful. Hope to see you again soon.

“Wonderful Location”

This hotel is right on the beach and our room overlooked it but sadly not with a balcony just a very large window that you could fully open. Nice room, fairly plain with little storage/wardrobe/draw space if you were staying more than a night. Nice bathroom, everything was very clean. I think we had one of the room that had not yet been refurbished. Hotel lobby/bar/restaurant areas were very smart with huge comfy sofas, the pools were clean and warm with sun loungers and towels. We didn't eat in the hotel, breakfast was not included and was fairly expensive. Staff were helpful and friendly.

“Not quite like the website but still a lovely place to stay”

My husband and three children visited Mission Beach to attend a 25th Wedding Anniverary Celebration.

The location was magic - right on the beach with uninterupted views. We had room 111 so we were on the bottom floor opening directly out on to the pool deck.

The rooms and the actually resort are some what dated but the bed was very comfotable, the airconditioning worked a treat and the kitchenette meant that we could organise some food for ourselves.

The pool was great and being able to step straight out of our room and into the pool was a plus.

The beach was patrolled and had a stinger net - too much seaweed however.

Having travelled to North Queensland before we were not sure what to expect from Mission Beach - thought it might be a bit like Palm Cove - to our surprise we found it more like the small south coast towns we are used to very underated / quiet and away from it all.

The food was the stand out of the place - I don't expect much in resorts - the standard buffet breakfast that everyone else has but this was different- the breakfasts were all individually cooked. There was a total of 10 of us in the group and our meals all came out together. The second nite our friends had organised a private table to celebrate their anniversary - it was beautifully put together and again the food was exellent.

I would definately stay here again if I am ever in that part of the country again. And our friends who live in Cairns will become regulars.
