“Spicers Tamarind ..... relax the night away!”
Spent one night at Spicers Tamarind in January 2012. Booked as a gift to spend time away from work and relax with each other - Definitely worked a treat! Have not switched off like that in a VERY long time.
Check in was super speedy and we were very impressed. Loved the cabins a.k.a pavillions. Basically a cluster of galvernised iron cabins with decks and lots of well manicured hedges. Nicely finished inside, generous in size for two, beds SO comfortable, lots of pillows, 2 showers heads and a cedar hot tub on the front deck. All the mod cons for a romantic weekend away.
Kitchenette was well equipped with everything you need (eg wine glasses, cheese knife and nice little platters, microwave, fridge to cool your wine - check out Flame Hill vineyard and Maleny Cheeses prior to checking in!) and liked the touch of freshly ground coffee and gourmet teas. Lots of design/travel books in the cabin which we spent time flicking through during our stay. My husband commented on how he would never sit around reading/watching tv for the afternoon and we did this for 4 hours before dinner. (No phone reception was FABULOUS!!!) Loved the hot tub, seemed really well cleaned and we throughly enjoyed even though are normally dubious about hot tubs and shared water etc. Only negative was that the hot tubs arent really private. You can sit in one and see people at the next cabin in thers. Annoying until we realised if we took the hot tub cover off and leaned against the glass fence we could then "screen" off for privacy (except for the kids and dogs walking up the other side but this was only randomly.) So dont let this fact turn you off the hot tub, there is a solution! There is also another large-ish pool on the grounds that would have been great to use if we had more time and weather was better.
A few teeny walks you can burn off breakfast with.... sort of! We came across the egg shaped swings hanging from trees and wish we'd found them the day before. So relaxing to kick back in them.
Re food options - They do a great breakfast - think a nice selection of pastries, quiches, toast, bacon, eggs, tomotas, mini muffins, fruit, yogurt, juices etc - we had ours delivered to the cabin, arrived spot on time and was lovely to sit on the little front deck on our Spicers Robes.
For dinner we dined at the Tamarind Restaurant. Being total foodies we were excited to dine (especially after rave reviews!) but left quiet disapointed. Don't know why .... Food was delish but the actual restaurant is pretty dull looking and tables close enough you can hear everyones conversations (not a fan of that!). Minimalist is cool but this is just a little dated perhaps? Wouldnt take much to give it a bit of that personality or uniqueness that Spicers claims is their speciality.
At Tamarind you can have banquets or do 2 courses for $65 and 3 courses at $75. Sounds reasonable until we broke it down after 2 courses and thought Wow we just paid say $25 for soup and $40 for a Thai main. Hence had the 3rd course to even it out and make it feel like a better experience. (We are happy to pay top $$ for great food but it was nothing outstanding) Menu option is about 5 dishes per course. Saw the raves on here on the Coconut soup so we thought we had better try that, it had great flavours and a generous serve. Main was just a thai main, nothing to write home about (and have def had better flavours at our local Thai, sorry guys!!), but dessert was great, beautifully presented and def worth a try. Service was hit or miss. Some staff were great, smiling, friendly and filling drinks up regularly but def hit a lag and bar lights were turned off whilst mains were still being served. (Took 1hr and 15min for our entree of soup to arrive but think we ordered at the end of a busy time. Though in that time had consumed cocktails, beer and nearly a bottle of wine so perhaps a diversion tactic!!) By the end we were waving our arms to try and order dessert and a drink, which was a shame to see such a drop in service and probably affected our thoughts on the restaurant overall. The girls at the bar looked bored and like they wanted to go home for the night. They turned off the bar lights whilst we were still eating mains and others being served, but then turned them back on again and started serving. (We guessed there was probably no manager on that night perhaps)
If we stayed again (which we probably won't but would still tell friends it was a really nice relaxing weekend away and would reccommend!) we would not dine at Tamarind, but would catch the shuttle to Clovelly or just try a restaurant in Maleny.
If you are looking at booking it is a great place to get away with your partner (no matter what your age, we are in our 30s) and completely turn off from outside distractions. We definitely felt totally relaxed after our 21 hours there. Normally when we travel we are out doing a million things and never just really sit around in the hotel room. It was nice that you could here. Just remember it is unique and thats the experience you are paying for.... If relaxation and quliaty time with your partner is what you are after, Try it!
Room Tip: I think any cabin would be ok. We were #3 and this was at the very end. Got some foot traffic but no...
