We made a last minute decision to check out of The Ibis in Townsville and spend our last night on Magnetic Island. I had flipped open a tourist booklet and happened upon the Island Leisure resort ad. Getting to the hotel was easy enough, although be sure to tell the bus driver you need to know where to get off, everything there is very laid back and is typically on island time. We checked in with no problem at all and were able to walk a short distance to rent a moke (my husband calls them motorized jokes, but they're fun) - you can also do this at the ferry. The bungalows are completely self-sufficient with kitchens and dining room tables and fridges. If you don't feel like cooking there's a restaurant right near by, a store to buy groceries (walking distance), or you can buy snacks at the little shop counter at the resort. They have a liquor license, so they are able to serve wine and beer, and they do a great continental breakfast for a totally economical price. It was just my husband and I, but I would imagine if we had kids they would love the triple bunk beds in the room. Similarly, they would have loved the game room which had several arcade games, an air hockey table, an internet station, books, a dollhouse and various other leisure activities. The pool was beautiful. I think that it had the nicest pool of all the places we stayed in Australia. The owners were so friendly and down-to-earth I mistook them for guests at their own property. They told us where we could rent fishing poles, where to get bait, and where to fish. We also got a tip from the owner - at dusk the rock wallabies come out on the rocky pier. They're totally worth looking for, although it's a little eerie to be out fishing and out of the corner of your eye you catch an incredibly small marsupial disappearing around a rock. We had a great time and fully intend to return we we have children - although it's a great place for a couple. Although the rooms may not be the most up-to-date rooms we stayed in, the ambiance is nice and the rooms are spotlessly clean.
