This was our penultimate stop during a three week trip up the Queensland coast and we wished we'd arrived a day earlier. We'd had a very poor experience the previous night further down the coast, where we almost felt like intruders at a private party, but the welcome given by Andrew & Trish when we arrived at Red Mill made us instantly feel at home. Lots of information about the area, the wildlife, walks, things to do, all with a cup of tea. This was Aussie hospitality at its best. A simple but very cosy & comfortable en-suite room with a lovely view of the garden from a wide verandah (check out the bandicoot that visits every night) which also has a fridge to store your beer/wine/water. The number and variety of birds is amazing, and even if you're not really a birder, you can't help but be delighted by the colours and sounds. Our hosts were extremely knowledgeable and were always ready to point out interesting species to less experienced guests. Breakfast is sumptuous and takes place further along the verandah, where there is also a constantly boiling "urn" for locally sourced tea (a bit like Ceylon) and coffee (smooth and delicious). Free wi-fi too.
There is a cool pool in the garden which was very welcome after a hot day, and eating out at night was only a 2 minute stroll into "town" which has a couple of surprisingly good eateries for such a small place.
On our first morning we were up before dawn and out on a river trip with "Sauce" who was another mine of information about local wildlife and with an incredible eye for spotting the most camouflaged species - I'd never have spotted that harmless tree snake on a branch a mere two feet from my head if he hadn't casually yet reassuringly pointed it out ! The morning mist lifting off the river like a bride's veil to reveal blue sky and sunshine was a sight to behold. Another river trip in the afternoon revealed crocodiles and more birds, particular favourites being a flock of swiftlets swooping low to pick insects from the water's surface.
Our second day was spent on a trip to and beyond Cape Tribulation, and again Trish had all the info we needed. A map was provided and all the key places marked and explained for us - where to see what birds, where to get a good lunch, Daintree Ice Cream (very yummy), great beaches, etc. We actually spent longer than anticipated at the Conservation Centre (recommended) so didn't manage everything on the list, but there's always another year !
Hospitality is about caring for your guests and both Andrew & Trish demonstrate this aplenty. The car had a puncture on our second day and on getting the wheel out to examine it on our return, Andrew spotted it from his balcony and was down immediately, full of concern. A quick test in his workshop confirmed a leak and an appointment was quickly made to see a tyre specialist on our way back to Cairns the next day. Also, seeing the car had accumulated heaps of dust from sundry unsealed roads, we were offered a hose down on the morning of departure so that the hire car firm didn't charge us extra for excess cleaning - so thoughtful.
Exceptional place, outstanding owners - when we return to Queensland, Red Mill House will be top of our list to revisit.
Room Tip: Upstairs rooms have great views over the garden and a communal verandah.
