Staff very helpful, had to ask to extra bath towel as there was only one hand towel and one bath towel in the bathroom, found another hand towel in drawer as stated by other reviews, had to ask for extra toilet paper as only less than half a roll left in room on our check in. Room comfortable but needed a clean, carpet in bedroom not clean and also bathroom not clean at all hairs in bath etc also s=hair cgrip behind sink, Breakfast good. would use again bt would check out cleanliness,

“Bags of character”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

This is one of those really old coaching inns that has plenty of original features like really creaky floorboards that both slightly handicap the ability to provide modern hotel luxury, but on the other hand are an integral part of the character of the place.

Our bathroom could have done with a bit of a makeover, but everything was clean and worked OK and for the price we paid I felt we had reasonable value for money.

All the staff we came across were very friendly and helpful.

The breakfast and its service were especially good, real sausages and real bread used for the toast.

Overall a happy stay.

Room Tip: Rooms on the front suffer a little from traffic noise.

“an impromptu excellent night”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

We stayed at the saracens by accident on the 8th Jan - en route to a funeral up north. booked last minute. (the hotel, not the funeral...)

from the reception by the chap on duty, to the breakfast the following morning, we cannot fault the place or the staff

Beds were huge, even in the family room, and sooo comfortable we didn't want to get up. Beer was very good, food was excellent and well priced, everywhere was clean and its also has a friendly ghost at the top of the stairs in the hotel :)

highly recommended to anyone

Room Tip: ask for a room away from the A5 - it gets busy early - not intrusive noise, but if you need to sleep...

“Hide the towel?”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

We arrived at an empty reception area that was eventually manned by a rather taciturn gentleman. The room was rather small but adequate. The double bed was comfortable.

The decor throughout the hotel was tired and in need of some TLC. The halls were very cold.

I couldn't see the second set of towels and phoned reception to ask for them. I was told that they were stored in a drawer in the room. I don't understand the logic of hiding towels from guests.

The restaurant staff were very friendly and helpful.
