“Thoroughly Enjoyable Weekend”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

This is by far the best Hotel myself and my husband have stayed in and we really did have a thoroughly enjoyable weekend, and when I read some of these other reviews I just don't understand!!

We arrived a little early and was able to check in with no problems, all staff that we had any dealings with were very friendly, helpful and informative. Our room which was in the main building was lovely, very clean and spacious and had all facilities that we needed.

We went across to the spa area, which again was very clean and well presented, there were fresh, clean towls and bathrobes provided and the changing rooms were very clean and tidy (no one mentioned needing a £1 coin to use the lockers though!) The pool was clean and fresh and a beautiful temperature, as was the jacuzzi and I thoroughly enjoyed the hour and half we spent in there, especially being able to look out at all the snow that was coming down! We then made use of the steam room, which again was clean and frsh and very relaxing.

We booked into the Abbey's Restaurant, which although the food was probably a little higher priced than we would normally pay it was most definitely worth it! The standard and quality was impeccable and again customer service was second to none! My husband and I both agree that it is the best mean we have ever eaten!!!

We had a very comfortable nights sleep and went down to a truly wonderful breakfast in the morning, where there was plenty of choice and it certainly set us up for our journey home in all that snow!

It really is the perfect place to stay especially if you like old-fashioned vintage styles and I don't see why people are complaining about decor etc as it is in keeping with the building!!

We have already recommended to family and will also be telling our friend, and we hope ourselves to return for a longer stay in the very near future!!

Room Tip: Stay in the main building.

“Consistently Good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

We have stayed at this excellent hotel every January for the past 5 years and continue to be very impressed. There is a choice of rooms & suites, all of which are excellent. Whilst not particularly cheap, the restaurant provides a good choice and excellent quality food.

Being situated right on the border of Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire this hotel is well situated for trips to both cities and, the Derbyshire Dales. There is an excellent bus service, every 20 minutes to both cities for those who don't want the hassle of city parking.

Room Tip: Rooms in the main building, overlooking the gardens are particularly favoured

“I really enjoyed my stay.”

I stay away once or twice a week and I was a little suspicious at booking because of the mixed reviews. I was put in a suite, and yes, not the best looking entry but the room itself was nice. Plenty of room and cosy. The pool and gym were a bonus. For breakfast there was lovely coffee on offer. Rarely can I order latte and lovely eggs benedict! I think a lick of paint would make this hotel a definate 4 star.

“Very willing staff, but oh my god, lacking in management particularity.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

We stayed here for the two days over the New Year, 2011/12. Upon arrival there was no one on reception, but fortunately I had visited the establishment before and walked around the hotel to find a member of staff. After booking in, we were advised that the spa and pool facilities were out of order much to our dismay, after which we were left to struggle up the stairs, through a couple of heavy fire doors to find our room on our own. Upon entering it was quite apparent that it had not been checked prior to our arrival since it absolutely reeked of very stale cigarette smoke and nicotine to the point that our clothes became contaminated. We noticed immediately that the bed was broken and had it not been the case that it was New Year and we had already paid for the two days, we would undoubtedly have about turned and left. Upon returning to reception, we told the duty receptionist of what we were greeted with in our appointed room, and to his credit when he also went to it and found to his obvious disgust and somewhat embarrassment he appointed us to a substantially better room, and to be honest was quite excellent, reflecting what we had anticipated when we book originally. Dinner on the first evening whilst amusing, was of the superb standard expected and indeed can be recommended. Regrettably dinner on the following evening was staggeringly appalling, both the quality, quantity and continuity of it. This was followed in the morning by what can only be described as a somewhat ramshackle and very noisy affair of a breakfast. To the staff’s credit, we, with others were moved to another breakfast room. At the end of the day, it all comes down to management, where the buck stops. What can one say, the staff are very pleasant, polite and delightfully willing, however, with just perhaps a more diligent application by the management, what turned out to be a less than satisfactory experience could have been abated. I make these comments having spent some years both working in all departments and managing hotels both here in the UK and elsewhere.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review. Your comments are appreciated and we value your feedback. We offer a varied range of accommodation at Risley Hall which is an old Saxon House with 16 bedrooms and a further 19 spacious suites in our Willoughby Court wing. Our Spa, with pool, steam room, sauna and treatment rooms is located in a separate building adjacent to Willoughby Court. Our top priority is to provide a high standard of service and facilities to our guests and clearly on this occasion, we have failed to achieve this. Unfortunately due to a technical fault which was beyond our control we did have to close our Spa, most regrettable but sadly un-avoidable. I am sorry that your appointed room was not up to standard and delighted that you found the alternative to be much more in-keeping with expectations. New Year was a very busy time at Risley and families are most welcome and I apologise that breakfast was not a calming experience. I am pleased that you found the staff at Risley to be polite and delightfully willing and once again thank you for your contribution.
