We booked at The George because the place where our friends were staying didn't have any extra rooms. We didn't know what to expect and had a very nice surprise when we arrived. It seems the Best Western chain is buying up a lot of small, old fashioned places so The George was the best of both worlds: it was quite quaint and reasonably priced but had nice new bathrooms. Our room was well designed--electric outlets at the level of the table so you don't have to bend down to plug in your laptop--and had a couple of arm chairs, an ironing board and a tea kettle. My one gripe would be that instead of bed side lamps they had too-bright spot lights on the ceiling trained on the bed which was no good for my husband who wanted to sleep while I was reading. The receptionist was very nice and ended up showing us some local sights on her day off!

The hotel prides itself on its food and the restaurant gets quite full so you have to book ahead. We enjoyed sitting in the lounge area with a drink while we pored over the menu and the food was quite fine--interesting but not too fussy and with a good cheese cart.

My advice would be: book a room that us not on the main road, have some meals at the nearby Plough (which has fantastic pub food) and take some nice walks in the countryside. We will be coming back next year.
