“Highly recommended”

My husband booked 2 nights for my birthday and it was great, everything you want in a hotel. for instance, my husband is on a gluten free diet and we both don't eat meat, so we're kind of tricky customers but the staff were very professional and accommodating. My husband was happy he got his gluten free toast at breakfast, no problem. Even when we ordered hot chocolate drinks in the lounge, by the fire, we were warned that they contained marshmallows (which wasn't veggie due to gelatine) and it was no problem to change them. Anything we asked for was very easy and nothing was a problem, that was the attitude.

The beds in the basic double were very large and comfortable, with comfy pillows that didn't collapse. My husband has a bad back and often has trouble in hotel beds but we had no trouble at all. The shower was an easy to operate high pressure power shower.

We'd recommend this hotel for comfort and helpful staff. The room was also nice and quiet.

“Excellent base for the Peak District”

We stayed for only one night at The George - but wished we had stayed longer. Its a lovely building and the room - we took a superior room - was spacious and really comfortable and warm, despite the snow and ice outside. The service is first class and check in and out really efficient. The restaurant is excellent and the lounge/bar is a great place to have pre dinner drinks and meet other guests. Food and wine were first class at dinner and breakfast was lovely and calm with a great selection of self-serve and placing an order with the kitchen. We cant wait to go back!

Room Tip: I would suggest getting a superior room as these are more spacious.

“A gem of a Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

We found this hotel on the website after not being able to decide where to go. We hadn't stayed in the Peake District before so thought we would "give it a whirl". What an absolute pleasure From arriving to leaving we were extremely well looked after. Reception was always manned. The waiters were extremely helpful and professional but they all worked really well together and the fact that they worked in harmony together shone through, leaving us feeling very relaxed about everything. This was a treat type of weekend. It wasnt a stuffy place and the dress code was smart casual but people did dress well for evening meal but it still had that relaxed atmosphere.

The hotel was quite boutiquey and the food - starting with breakfast was plentiful and most enjoyable. The evening meals were absolutely delicious. There was a choice from the specials menu and also an early bird menu and then the a la carte - it was totally delicious. Some would say there wasnt a great deal of the food but the fine dining experience for me was more than adequate and the deserts were absolutely to die for.

Our room was a superior room with a lovely view out into the village which is known to be the place where the Eyre family lived as in Jane Eyre. Apparently, as the story goes, Emily Bronte stayed at The George when she was younger and knew the Eyre family that is how she came to use the names in her book. Hathersage is ideally placed within the Peake District and we visited Bakewell which is a lovely old historic town and we also visited Castleton which was a lovely place. The views into the Hope Valley were awesome, not to be missed.
If I had to choose a hotel at short notice I would certainly always remember this hotel, it was a pleasure to be there and to be honest it is a place I wouldn't mind be snowed in!!! the food was delicious and the bar was well stocked! Go on, enjoy it!! you wont regret it.

Room Tip: We had a superior room. There was lots of room, small bathroom but very well stocked including a mi...

“Breakfast Highlight”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 November 2011

Spent one night here in October 2011. The charge of £145 was way over the top yet the place was full; probably testament to the popularity of the wonderful Derbyshire Peak District.

Staff were all very good and the atmosphere relaxed and friendly. Our room was noisy both from the busy road and adjoining rooms and we would not want to stay in the same area of the hotel again.

The old building was characterful and rooms well decorated; bed was comfortable and bathroom reasonably well-equipped. Only two minor gripes; the cold water tap ran warm for a while and there was no soap bars just those annoying liquids.

The best thing about this place is the breakfast; the room's lovely, the waiter serving us was
brilliant and the choice extensive including home-made muesli and superb porridge apparently made from oats from a local mill. Superb.

We would gladly return here but would think that the room price should be £90-£100 including breakfast; we would not pay £145 again.

“excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 November 2011

My wife and I spent two nights at the George, I could not fault anything. The staff were excellent, the service superb and the food was the best we have eaten. we stayed in the four Poster room which was well decorated and the facilites excellent. I had booked it as a surprise for my wifes birthday, and she wants to go back again as we had such a good experience. We stayed on the from the 5th to the 7th November 2011, will definately be back again.

Room Tip: Four Poster room excellent.
