Where to start.... we booked the march special offer - if its your birthday u eat for free.
As we walked in, the lady behind the bar looked at us but no smile or 'hello' or acknowledgment. (she was sloshing the Carling round the glass to get a head on it - this only flattens the beer) We waited patiently and she got to us (still no smile!) We told her we had a table booked and began telling her our details but she spoke over us and asked the name. She then pointed at a table in the corner and told us that was ours. I was just deciding if I was supposed to climb over or under the table to get into the alcove where one seat was when we decided, in my heels and posh frocked I'd have to move it.

We were then given a menu to share (they weren't busy so why not one each?!) and asked if we'd like a drink , to which we reply we'd like a wine list . We chose a bottle of sparkling pink wine. Then we were bought some stale bread with solid butter. We finally got the wine after being sat for 20 minutes. Once I finally got the wine waiters attention (he saw some friends across the room) I asked him swap the bread and he had guessed it was stale so not the first time he's been asked that I guess.
We got some nice soft strange tasting bread - possibly made in a bread maker - it was a bit sweet and cake like.
Then we ordered - now iIwould normally ask if something is freshly prepared but we know one of the chefs who used to work there and we understood everything was fresh- so I ordered the crab cakes. they were frozen from Sailbrand (part of brakes) not what i expected but edible if not particularly nice and not worth £6.50!
My husband had the oak smoked salmon. he took one mouthful and spat it out! he called a waitress over and asked to speak to the owner. when she finally appeared she asked him if was aware it was oak smoked. now he's been a chef for over 20 years and is classicly trained. she wasn't to know this but when he told her she'd said it was fine and he was wrong. i've never known him to spit anything out - especaiily in a restaurant. and why would we make it up?! She wasn't interesed so we paid for our wine and left - taking it with us. no one apologised. i was very embarrassed and my birthday was ruined.
i believe they have had a change of head chef and if this is the future - i can't see them holding onto their reputation. try it at your peril - if anything doesn't taste right for heavens sake don't eat it!!!

We stayed at The Black Horse Inn on a Sunday night to extend a weekend break in Leeds. We took advantage of a Booze n Snooze rate, which was in effect DB&B.

We stayed in the Jacobean room, which is a superior room, and it was spacious and of a very high standard. The bed was big & comfortable, the bathroom was spotlessly clean, and the amenities were very good, including Sky Sports so I could catch the test match!

We found the pub atmosphere, to be honest, a bit formal, although the service was excellent - for example, our drinks were brought over to us as we settled down on the leather sofas. As the evening got later more people came in but it didn't feel much like a local and the atmosphere was a little stitled throughout. However, it was very relaxing and the beers were Landlord and Black Sheep, so you can't go far wrong with that!

Our meal was good but not exceptional and we were seated adjacent to the bar, not in the restaurant, presumably because it was a quiet night. Likewise that's where we had breakfast, which was good but nothing special.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay but it was perhaps a little too quiet and refined for ruffians like us! I suspect, however, that on a busier evening it would be even better and certainly the rooms cannot be faulted in any way. Recommended if you're in the area and 100% preferable to any of the local chain alternatives!

This is not a complaint so, don't misunderstand me!

My better-half and I were bored with our local pubs for Sunday Lunch so we looked on TripAdvisor for somewhere new! We picked this place and phoned to check whether they had space as it was 6pm on a Sunday evening! No worries! We were off!

We like our nice meals in quality restaurants but this was only Sunday Lunch in a pub about 6miles away. The missus offered to drive so that I could have a couple of glasses of red wine!!! That's why I love her so much!!

Punched the Post Code into the SatNav and off we go.

Twenty mins later we arrived at the Black Horse Inn. We had booked in to the 'bar' not the restaurant for lunch so when we walked through the door we thought we'd gone into the restaurant by mistake - Consierge, bar tender, somelier and a couple of smartly dressed waitresses to greet us. We apologized and said we were looking for the bar as we have a table for two for Sunday Lunch. We were gobsmacked to be told that this WAS the bar!!!

AAAARGH!!! We looked around the room - then at each other - both of us slowly turning red! Scruffy t-shirt, jeans and old trainers!!! Not suitably dressed for this place. We were quite embarrassed as the dress-code of the other guests reflected the ambience of the restaurant! No-one seemed to notice our attire and we were led to the leather sofa to enjoy a pre-dinner Shiraz.

The menu was placed before us and I was pleasantly surprised at the contents as I'm not too keen on my wife's regular choice of Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding every Sunday Lunch - I'm a bit more adventurous. The food that was being served to the other customers was definitely NOT pub-grub!

The waiter led us to our table and one of the best meals I've had in a long time - Pumpkin Soup, King Prawn Risotto. Roast Beef, Beef and Black Sheep Ale Pie. Rhubarb Crumble with Ice Cream, Chocolate Cake with Cream....washed down with a lovely Earthworks Shiraz! The young waitress took our order for starters, main course and pudding without the need for pen & paper.

It worked out a bit more expensive than we were expecting to pay for Sunday Lunch in a pub - but as I said, this is a quality eating establishment. The quality of the food, the service and the atmosphere of the 'pub' was worth it. There are organised events on a wine-tasting theme - which I will be keeping an keen eye on, and some nice rooms which we will be treating ourselves to after our next meal here - which will be pretty soon.

All in all, quality of food, service and the surroundings, I'd give this a 10/10. Maybe the proprietors could mention on their website www.blackhorseclifton.co.uk that this is not a traditional pub!! The only other local restaurant that comes close is The Gray Ox at Hartshead which is less than a mile away.

To avoid embarrassment, smart casual dress is the order of the day!! ; - ) We will be back!

Stayed for one night in this hotel for work - and was thoroughly delighted.

Very helpful staff looked after us, as well as in the bar and at breakfast. Rooms were very clean and tidy, and decorated well. The whole place had a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere.

Restaurant was a little expensive; bar a tad pricey too, but beer was served well.

Definitely a pleasant, comfortable and charming little place.
