“Not up to expectations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

Booked a table here as we live in the area. Boooked for 7pm. Had a drink at the bar first but we were shown to our table 20 miniutes late without any explanation. Restaurant was quiet so I don't know why we had to wait. The female staff member in a buisness suit behind the bar was quite miserable and not friendly. The restaurant was freezing cold. Another guest asked for the heating to be turned up but it only just became warm by the end of our meal. The service was good but on leaving we left a generous tip and heard the waitress say "that was a good one". Food was bog standard and average. It was nice enough but luke warm and nowhere near the standard it should have been for the price. The portions were small with added 'foam' which added nothing to the dish. Toilets were unclean and unstocked also. Overall we won't be returning and my advice would be to go to the Grey Ox at hartshead...it's much better.

“Never disappointed, lovely food and gorgeous accommodation!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2011

Location of the Black Horse is brilliant for us, in a nice quiet village but close enough to the motorway so its not too long of a journey. My wife and I have visited the restaurant 3/4 times a year for about four years. We have never been disappointed with the food, atmosphere or the service standard.
This time we decided to book a room for the night (we don't usually as we don't live far away at all) but the receptionist explained a special deal on the rooms when I called to book the table. It was £40 a room when you book to dine in the restaurant. This would be cheaper for us than a taxi home. The room was gorgeous, lovely beams etc and you could tell a lot of thought had gone into the decoration of the room. We would definitely stay again!

“Fine yet welcoming dining”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 August 2011

This is the second time that I have been to the Black Horse, both times being for special family occasions. A quaint and simple English pub from the outside, it exceeds expectations within. Service is excellent - all of the staff are attentive, friendly and polite. Meanwhile, the food is delicious with good portion sizes and wonderful flavours. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, making it perfect for any occasion. I have had a great time here on both visits, and will certainly be back!

“Consistently fabulous”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 June 2011

We are lucky to have the Black Horse as our local so are frequent visitors.

We had our wedding reception there in January and it could not have been better. Lydia could not have been more accommodating - nothing was too much trouble for her. We had a reception for 80 people - everyone said how fantastic the food had been and what a great venue it is. We had a hog roast and a carvery buffet - it was excellent - nothing was left. Chef made us a croquembouche rather than a traditional wedding cake. Candles, fire baskets and lanterns made the outdoor area very special.

I think it is superb value. The room hire was about £275 and the buffet £25 a head. There's no uplift on drinks. The DJ was brilliant - played everything we wanted and was a great laugh. We got exactly what we wanted.

We regularly attend wine tastings and other events. The wine tastings are about £40 a head which generally includes a 4 course meal and not short of 2 bottles of wine to taste - no half measures here! The "call my bluff" tastings are brilliant fun.

Sunday luch / early bird is excellent value at £15 a head for two courses. The a la carte is also fabulous quality - the food is of a high standard, but you don't think that the food has been "mucked around" - it's traditional with a modern twist. Portion sizes may look on the small size, but they are deceptively filling.

Owners Jane and Andrew make you feel very welcome. Their daughter Lydia organises events and has great ideas and insights.

The beer garden has just had a make over and we are loving the new seating area and Jane's mum's flowers. It's the perfect place to while away a bottle of wine. And if the weather gets grim, move inside and sit next to the stove!
