Twelve of us stayed for the weekend arriving Friday 31st September, leaving Sunday October 2nd and we could not have been made more welcome. Our room, room 10, was spacious and comfortable although the shower temperature did tend to fluctuate. A hairdrier, tea and coffee facilities and biscuits were available in the room. The television was a good Panasonic, flat screen and was wall mounted opposite the bed.The towels were soft and of good quality. Breakfast is served between 8.30a.m. and 9.30a.m. This is clearly mentioned in the guest information in the room and we were also told the breakfast times when we arrived. Earlier breakfasts are by arrangement. Breakfast consisted of an excellent choice of Kellogg's cereals , grapefruit segments and juices on a self serve basis followed by a choice of full English cooked breakfast, vegetarian breakfast or continental breakfast all included in the room rate. A choice is given of tea or freshly ground coffee. Brown or white toast was accompanied by a choice of small jars of Tiptree preserves available in a large basket on the self service table. The cooked breakfast was served on a hot plate, was very well cooked and generous. The bacon in particular was excellent. Morning staff were pleasant and attentive and nothing seemed to be too much trouble.
We ate together in the restaurant on both evenings and it was suggested by the serving staff that we gave our individual orders together with our room number. Doing this saved us having to sort out who owed what later. This worked very well with both food and drink. I didn't hear anyone complain about the food or drink. I had a "special" of sea bass in a light crab sauce on the first night and rump steak with all the trimmings on the second night. My food was very tasty, well cooked and generous. One person so enjoyed the Fish Chips and mushy peas that she had it again on the second evening. The people eating the pies and casseroles all commented favourably. The choice of real ales was excellent and the house wines were very good. We felt that we had made a good choice of venue for our weekend. There is a car park across the road for guests, a sandwich shop a few yards away if you need a packed lunch and the centre of Castleton is a matter of yards away. Dogs are allowed in the main bar but not in the restaurant or bedrooms. Children are allowed in the restaurant but not in the main bar. If you have a dog and a child then you have a problem! Outside areas not available other than three benches outside on the road side.
