“Stayed here with a groupon voucher”

We are both a very young 50..This was a Xmas present from our daughter..check in from 2pm but we arrived 1.30 so we could have a coffee & a look around as well as being excited to be away for a few days rest.. The coffee was black as apparently machine had broken. We were asked to go for our free massage straight away but when I explained to the staff that our suitcase was still in the car she said "well in 15 mins then.".15 mins later the room still not ready but they again asked us to go for massage which at this point we still hadn't got cases or room or coffee.. We were told massage had to be in next half hour so we both reluctantly went in clothes we travelled in.. This wasn't right but the massage was only on our back so we just had to take jumper off... Omg.. We had paid for an upgrade for a suite which was the Ashbourne suite. It was a large room..But we were shocked to see cobwebs around ceiling and the television stand I wrote "clean me" in thick dust... Jacuzzi was years old very very tired fittings, the jets on the jacuzzi were really dirty so we decided not to use..the room wasn't filthy just needed a proper clean..we then went to the pool but sadly the water was so cold we couldn't go in.. The pool area is very very run down black marks all over the ceiling plus cracked ceiling tiles everywhere..When we told the reception lady she told us the water should have been 30 deg but when we and other guests who were there complaining said it wasn't the lady seemed to have no answers...it is great shame the whole hotel is in desperate need of a refurb but also a good clean..it is totally miserable place very dark dismal no background music anywhere just totally uninviting.. The food was ok but nothing special.not at all the menu you would have expected beefburgers steak or cajun chicken...We had arranged to stay for a well earned break 1 night on groupon and a further 4 days but sadly left on second day...the Greek lady on reception was lovely very helpful but that is the only staff I could comment on nicely.. The cleaners woke us up early talking very loudly about love bites.....will definitely not be back or would recommend. Even with groupon it wasn't worth it. We are not fussy people just down to earth people.. We never expected 5 star but 1 star would be over rated... Thank you for reading

“Not all it seems”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

First impessions from the outside, not bad, however it is looking very tired and in need of some work on the inside.
Having said that, our room was clean, and bedding clean, furnishings were very dated and the wardrobe very unstable, the bed was rock hard, Didn't sleep too well.
The staff were friendly and helpful.
My Husband and I both had a back massage, girls were very nice but the spa was a bit musty, the towel by the wash basin looked as if it had been used to wash the floor, ( not nice ) .
We ate in the restaurant, food was not bad but very little choice, I didn't have the breakfast but it looked ok and my husband said it was fine.
Would we go back , No
This was a Groupon visit, so I wouldn't pay to stay at this hotel.

Room Tip: not sure there is a good room

“dont bother!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

This Hotel needs a revamp, tired, outdated cramped!
We upgraded to a club room which was tiny and included non of the added extras detailled!
stains on the chair and bed, apart from that the room was clean and we didnt experience the mould and damp other guests had.
STAFF: Rude unfriendly, we booked a hot stone massage the girls looked like they would rather be anywhere else and were hostile and undfriendly and the massage only lasted 15 minutes!
FOOD: Average okish bar needs a good paint and update all over the hotel and a CLEAN!
SPA: sauna and steam room smelt and changing facilities very unpleaseant, NO JACUZZI pool was outdated and lacking in any positives.

Overall we didnt enjoy our weekend and even with groupon prices we felt we overpaid.

“There are better places to stay.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

I can't really fault the cleanliness of the rooms...but they are basic. The restaurant and bar are very expensive, as are the breakfasts (£ 12 extra) and the walk back from Ashbourne is very steep! Look out for special deals that let you use the gym and swimming pool for a pound extra a day.

“Nice massage but wouldn't recommend you stay there!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

My partner and I have just stayed at this hotel through the Groupon deal that other posters have mentioned, which was £69 for 2 for the night, which included a free mini massage each and main course dinner each. All I can say is, if the massages hadn't been included in the price we would have been robbed!!

First, the good points:

The vast majority of the hotel staff were all really nice and friendly and helpful (apart from the only waiter in the restaurant at dinner, who seemed to make it his mission to ignore us from the moment we approached him for a table for dinner!);

Free wi-fi was good;

and the other good point was that the massage was nice. That concludes the good points!!

The bad points:

The food in the restaurant was absolutely rank. They only offer a small menu (about 6 starters/main courses and puddings), which is absolutely fine - IF you do those 6 options well.

When we arrived for dinner at 8pm (dinner service is from 5.30pm until 9.30pm); two of the options were unavailable (the two that I would have chosen!), which I thought was bad, as there was still a good hour and a half of service to go, and the hotel was very busy with people taking advantage of the Groupon deal, so I think personally, they should have accounted for that and ordered supplies accordingly.

I opted for a standard burger and chips meal (there are NO healthy options on this menu, and only one vegetarian option - but it's not even a vegan option, so would be difficult for vegans to eat there).

Honestly, I've had "better" burgers off a burger van. There was no sign of any side salad with my meal (either on the side or in the bun), and they had completely run out of ketchup! I know this is probably a trivial thing, but when the majority of the menu consists of "XXX and chips", the least you expect is a bit of tommy ketchup! This made the very average burger and chips even more bland and tasteless than necessary (no form of burger relish in the bun either).

My OH had the gammon, and he wasn't impressed with that, either, and he loves gammon. My little one had a lasagne; but it was huge. In fact, all the portions were huge. Unneccesarily so. Perhaps they should focus more on quality of food rather than quantity. They don't do child portions. Which was a shame, because they definitely cater for children with the rooms and location.

If the main meal hadn't been included in the Groupon deal, we wouldn't have been at all impressed with paying for what we had. Don't get me wrong, I don't expect 5*, but I do expect a reasonable quality; after all, this hotel is marketing itself as a "spa" hotel - not Burger King!!

The hotel was built/opened in the 1980's - and my guess is that it hasn't had a refurb since! The rooms just look grubby and shabby - the bunk beds in our family room (nice touch that they are full size bunk beds, and not the usual pull-out sofa bed the Little One has to endure!) - looked as though they'd seen better days 10 years ago; but they did the job and it was a big enough room so even with the bunk beds at one side, the room didn't feel cramped.

We had a particularly tasteful coloured bathroom suite in our (TINY!) en-suite bathroom (NOT!!) - complete with filthy toilet seat hinges (eeeewww!) and cracked bath panel. The only positive thing about the bathroom, was that when you sat on the loo, your face was in the sink - a good place for it to be for throwing up after the nasty dinner!!

The mattresses were rock hard, and someone had nicked the hairdryer out of the room (probably to make up for spending so much money to stay the night!).

There was an old CRTV style tele in the room, and the kettle was one of the huge old-fashioned round things that sounded like an aircraft taking off!

If it hadn't been for the massage and the fact my LO was desperate to enjoy the pool, I would have left the hotel. My OH and I were really, really disappointed with the quality of this hotel over all, and certainly will not be going back or recommending it, which is a shame, as it definitely has potential. We're not snobs either, we've stayed in Travelodges and Premier Inns, and even they were of a much better standard than this hotel. I wish I'd read these reviews before purchasing the Groupon deal, as I really wouldn't have bothered if I had! :-(

Room Tip: The family room we were in was spacious and had full size bunk beds.
