Had a cracking stop over on the 5th day of the C2C. The landlord kept the kitchen open for us to arrive in as they stopped serving meals at 8.00pm. Served up a welcome meal that was pretty good. The room was spot on, very clean and the bathroom/shower was well needed and looked to have been recently refurbed. The breakfast in the morning was really good to the point we didn't want to walk afterwards, and the landlord couldn't have been more helpful. Good stop over.

We stayed at the Kings Arms Hotel whilst doing the Coast to Coast walk. This was for our 5th stopover. Although this was the least favourite place to stay out of all the places we stayed at, we cannot fault the friendly service we received.

We had a drink in the bar upon arrival, chatting to the landlord who was very friendly, before being showed to our room, which was very big and nicely decorated. It had a nice large bathroom with shower.

We didn't have an evening meal here, we ate elsewhere but we weren't overly impressed with the area in general. But what more can you expect from a village which is not far from the main roads, when you've been used to staying in picturesque villages within the Lake District.

Breakfast was served in the bar.....we were offered a full english along with various cereals and toast. The landlord kept checking we'd got 'enough' of everything.

We took the offer of a packed lunch as well. Not amazing, but suitable.

slim pickings in Shap, but we decided to eat here - much to our dissapointment and dismay! It was cheap, that was the only thing that it had going for it, but not cheap enough for the slop we were served.

I ordered a shepherds pie, it was almost mince only just warm at the bottom of a thin layer of smashlike potatoe under a thick slab of orange cheese that didnt taste like cheese but left a layer of grease across the dish. The veg was a lame limp 2 bits of something.

I was really hungry having walked all day, but couldnt manage to eat this stuff, horrid. I left most of mine and went to the coop to get a pasta salad.

After saying they served breakfast between 7.30 and 9am, when we came down for breakfast at 8.45am the owner told us we were "too late" for breakfast and he was too busy to serve us as he "had "things to do". He then grudgingly served us cereal and white toast. We were walking the Coast to Coast but he was not geared up for walkers. e.g. there was no drying room. His attitude was rude and offhand. I would never stay there again despite the rooms being beautifully decorated with nice firm beds.
