We stayed at Muncaster's Coachman's Quarters for a family short break in August 2011. Our family had two rooms, just down the hall from each other. One room was near the doorway to the kitchen and lounge, and that door could be quite loud banging shut. I think that would be an easy fix. Ours was the family room, with an extra single bed for our son. It was wonderful to have this as an option, however, the placement of the bed was unfortunate. It was right under the wall-mounted television, right up against an electrical outlet, and right next to the hairdryer (see my pics). The outlet could at least have a safety cover placed over it. My son had a great time pulling down the hairdryer but thankfully the television was out of his reach.
The bathroom, and in particular the shower, really needs a good scrubbing. See my pictures of the shower for an up-close view of the mildew!
The common areas were nice, though the lighting in the kitchen was a bit iffy and the dining room wasn't open until our second night, so we ate in the kitchen.
It is a great value and the setting is fabulous. We enjoyed after-hours access to the grounds, the play area, and the owls. It was all magnificent!
Access to the town for pubs and restaurant facilities could be better - it's a long walk down the hill and the pathway recommended by staff took us on a circuitous route through some campgrounds! If you arrive by rail, be prepared to pre-book a taxi to get up to Muncaster. We managed to catch a bus down to Ravenglass for the Ratty and we walked back as it was a nice day. A Muncaster staff person was very kind and drove us back to the station the next day. All the staff were lovely and very kind and helpful.
