“FANTASTIC FOOD!!!”

Just arrived back from a long weekend in Windermere with family. We were recommended the Queens Head by a local, if you wanted a fine meal, he was not wrong. The venison shank was cooked to perfection, as was the pheasant stuffed with pigeon. The fish was also a great success. 6 happy customers, could not fault a thing.

Then on to desserts one word OUTSTANDING....three different desserts all finished off, the only hard decision you'll have is which one to have.

All in all a fantastic night of food and wine, with excellent customer service....staff are so friendly and nothing is too much.

“Christmas 2011 washout”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

What appalling customer service. My mother and I booked for Christmas Day lunch, December 2011. Less than mediocre food and average accomodation - plus, we were charged for a room we didn't even sleep in.
We were forced to book overnight accomodation, as the Queens Head wouldn't accept us just for the meal.
The food was not worth commenting upon, very poor value for money at £45 per head for standard 3-course lunch. Parnsip soup tasted very odd and tangy. Turkey was ridiculously presented, a fajita standing to attention on the plate, tough and tasteless. Soggy potatoes & veg. Stodgy pud. We left most of it.
The bedroom was pokey and airless, made more so by the presence of six stuffed teddy bears and a stuffed dog door stop.
My mother has had problems with her back and knees. The Inn knew that she was mobility limited when we rang to enquire about a reservation, yet still encouraged us to book - I had to drop her at the top of the hill to enter via the fire exit on Christmas Day, but she still had to tackle the steep stairs to get down into the bar/restaurant area. This is not a place to stay if you are unsteady on your feet.

She twisted her knee very badly on the stairs, necessitating her very strong painkillers - which were at home, over an hour's drive away. We therefore left and did not stay the night. Although the Inn said we could return again, we have informed them that due to her now needing two knee operations, we will not be able to return within the year. They have offered to extend the period but this is no good to us.They are unwilling to consider a compromise.

Don't bother trying to find this place. It's a waste of time, a waste of money. £200 flushed away in the blink of an eye. Happy Christmas.

When booking this you were made quite clear that we were a 17th century coaching inn and the room was on the 1st floor; there are steps leading to the room but we also have easier access around the side of the building. At the time of your stay there was no mention of your mother injuring herself nor that you did not enjoy your meal. You were only too happy at the time to sing the praises of the place whilst you stayed and the communication between us and you was very much positive. Some time has now passed and you have taken to put this on trip advisor. Our policy is that all payments are non-refundable, however out of our kindness we offered you a complimentary one night’s stay, but as we refused to allow you to use this towards food, 1. You did not previously inform us of the unsatisfactory meal; 2 you were made quite clear where the bedroom was located and still booked it; we have been a victim of our own kindness. Christmas Day lunch was oversubscribed and therefore we were only allowing Christmas Dinner with the one room which we had left as we had to bring another table in to accommodate this. I am sure we would have had far more reviews from the 120 people who dined with us if the menu was overpriced. This review proves how Trip Advisor is so disliked by the industry. Our Terms and Conditions clearly state that all payments are non-refundable and the voucher was given out of our kindness and high customer service. How funny since we refused to exchange the voucher, that an accident happened which you made no one at the time aware of and you did not enjoy the meal, which you told my staff that you both had.

“Ideal for a short break”

We stayed here for one night and were very impressed by the whole experience. The accomodation was warm and comfortable. For the older more discerning guest the crockery and teapot etc were a welcome change from the usual "jam jars"!The food was excellent and sometimes a bit different, the breakfast menu was vast and gave you a hearty start to the day.The staff were very helpful and friendly. We will probably stay here again when visiting the Lake District and will definately recommend it to others.

Room Tip: Ther are 4 poster beds if you want something a bit special.

“loved it!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

in spite of the mixed reviews of this hotel, i booked one of the four poster rooms as a treat for my husbands birthday. we arrived on saturday afternoon, before the alloted check-in time, which didnt seem to be a problem. we were greeted by a very pleasant young girl who offered us complimentary tea or coffee, which we thought was a nice touch. we were asked if we wanted to book a table for dinner, and we asked if we could reserve a particular table in the cosy, quaint bar area that we liked, and were pleased when they said yes.
for dinner, I had the pot roast venison, which was delicious, and the huge portion of meat was so tender it just fell off the bone. my huband had the pheasant stuffed with pigeon, which was also delicious and perfectly cooked. for dessert, I had the chocolate fondant with peanut butter ice cream (home made). absolute heaven. my husband had sticky toffee pudding, his favourite, which he actually said was the best he'd ever had.

when we came down for breakfast in the morning, the waiter explained to us that there would be a bit of a wait as a few people had come for breakfast at the same time and all breakfasts were cooked to order. we weren't bothered by this, and when it did arrive, it was certainly worth waiting for! we didnt actually eat again till 9pm that night!

our room (18) was lovely. spacious, clean, comfy bed, lovely views over the fells, and the cute teddies on the bed and on the chairs, together with the cushions made the room feel very cosy and welcoming. the bathroom was spotless too.

overall, the location is very peaceful and picturesque, the staff were great, and the food was amazing!! we would definitely go there again.

thankyou to all at the queen's head for a wonderful stay!!
