“Perfect retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

We thoroughly enjoyed a weekend break at The Old Vicarage in October. We had stayed there before in 2007 and this visit was just as wonderful - we didn't want to leave!

We requested Room 1 again, with the view to Low Fell. The en-suite bathroom with the roll-top bath is wonderful for a luxurious soak and there's also a shower cabinet for those who want a quicker wash. Everything in the room is stylish and no detail is overlooked. The website states that the rooms have a tea tray - but that is such an understatement. Quality ground coffee and a cafetiere, quality tea bags and a small thermos of fresh milk, are a treat. But that special extra is always included - the little packages of Jane's homemade shortbread.

The Old Vicarage is beautifully decorated and maintained with love and attention. Every detail demonstrates Jane and Peter's wish to provide a quiet and hospitable retreat for guests that need a break from the daily stresses and strains or to celebrate a special occasion. Jane and Peter strike just the right note of being welcoming hosts, enquiring about your day, answering queries about the area but never intrusive or overbearing.

The meals are beautifully presented and delicious. Breakfast choices include Jane's homemade bread, a bowl of porridge presented on a plate with a spoon of cream and a spoon of maple syrup - what a way to start a day's walking. But I'm sure Jane wouldn't be the least offended if guests don't want to indulge and prefer something simpler. We've had dinner at The Old Vicarage during both visits and the food is excellent.

Lorton is well placed to explore the nearby fells and also Cockermouth, Keswick, Ambleside and Windermere and Grasmere. And Lorton has the advantage of being quieter than all of the above and none of the parking challenges of other towns in the Lakes.

We look forward to our next visit!

“Wonderful house, impeccable service, friendly and relaxing.”

We stayed for 3 nights over NYE. Couldn't have asked for a more relaxing stay. EVERYTHING is just right and the attention to detail is fantastic.

The food (both breakfast and evening meals) were delicious and the room (along with the rest of the house) is very high quality.

We will, no doubt, be back!

“The most exquisite B&B”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2011

If you want a truly wonderful B&B, set within beautiful surroundings, with first class service and food, then the Old Vicarage at Lorton is certainly it. Jane and Peter are fantastic hosts and their breakfasts and evening meals are absolutely delicious.

We stayed for four nights in room 3. It was immaculate and included some lovely touches: robes; good quality toiletries; an excellent hairdryer (for the ladies reading this); fresh milk for tea and coffee; proper hangers (!) in the wardrobe; dressing table with mirror.

The lounge area was very comfortable with a roaring fire and a good selection of books to help pass the time either after a long walk or before and after your evening meal, perhaps with a class of wine or two.

Peter and Jane are knowledgeable about the local walking areas and are happy to give you some ideas and tips about where to go. The setting of the B&B is certainly one of the most picturesque we have stayed in within the Lakes, being surrounded by the hills giving the most dramatic views, whether you're looking up to or down from them.

We had a really relaxing time here and would certainly recommend this gorgeous place.

Peter and Jane really make you feel welcome. Both the dinner and the breakfast were superb, and the room was beautifully done. Nothing was too much trouble, and it combined luxury with a personal, friendly touch.
