Me and my partner booked two nights arriving New Year's Eve. We booked over the phone with Danielle who was absolutley lovely and, to our delight, Danielle upgraded us to the Bridal Suite - We were very much looking forward to our stay.
After a 2.5 hour journey, we arrived and were checked in by a young girl who asked me to sign a form and I was handed a key. No information was provided of the hotel e.g. meal times, which you would normally expect.
We walked into the Bridal Suite and straight away noticed that water was leaking through the ceiling. I quickly got hold of what cups I could to catch the water, moved a table lamp which was getting wet, and switched off mains sockets which were close to the leaking water and ran down to Reception to inform them. They explained someone would be up to the room shortly.
About 10 mins later a young girl appeared who poked her head round the corner to (unhelpfully) confirm there did indeed appear to be a leak and explained she would inform the Manager. We waited in the room a further 10 mins or so before I went back down to Reception to see what was happening.
I enquired with the Manager, and she explained that we could either stay in the room or be moved to their only other vacant room. I asked if it would be possible to assess the leak today, but I was told the repair man wasn't on duty. I viewed the alternative room and compared to the Bridal Suite (top room), we were given a family room with wallpaper peeling off the walls, an odd large burn mark in the carpet, and a view of the bin store (we weren't impressed).
There was an option to move into the Bridal Suite the next day if the leak had stopped. However, there was no guarantee that the leak would not start again so we didn't bother. You would have expected that staff would have attended to the Bridal Suite with towels and buckets, but they seemed to do nothing!! (Good thing I had checked the mains sockets).
The first night we asked 3 members of staff what time dinner would be served, we were given 3 different answers. The second night we asked 2 members of staff what time dinner would be and were given 2 different answers.
Food was low-average to poor. On the second night there were only 2 tables dining (including our own) but a long waiting time for food. The explanation from the waitress was that the Chef wasn't "with it today".
Bottles of wine were ordered New Year's Eve of which the barman informed us were £11.95 a bottle, but over £17 a bottle appeared on our bill the next day. However, this was quickly addressed with no fuss.
A disappointing New Year's Eve; however me and my partner agreed to make the most of it ourselves, which we did (with the help of alcohol - lol). We also got on with other guests so, despite failings of the hotel, our New Year's Eve wasn't a total disaster.
I would not return to this hotel and would not recommend it either; which is a shame because it is a very lovely building with equally lovely gardens. The hotel even promotes a wedding package. However personally, following our experience I would not trust the hotel with the responsibility of a Wedding.
To end the review on a good note however, Danielle is a lovely member of staff as explained above. Also there was a young lady, with straight blonde hair, dressed in black, recided around Reception (think she was one of the Managers) who was very nice, friendly and helpful (my apologies that I did not get this lady's name). It was a shame that the rest of their team did not match up to their higher standards.
