We chose this hotel because of its location and the reviews and weren't disappointed. The owners are refurbishing/upgrading the rooms in the hotel and we were fortunate to stay in one that had been completed at the front. The bathroom was finished to a very high standard and we had great views towards Catbells.
The staff were very helpful, friendly and courteous, they couldn't do enough for us. Whilst the breakfast and evening meals were well cooked and tasty they weren't over generous in the way we have come to expect when staying in the Lake District. A minor criticism and can easily be addressed. On a similar vein there were no packs of biscuits with the coffe/tea tray, why, seems such a simple thing to do espcially when they supplied bottles of water every day.
As for location it is very handily placed for walks taking in the Ladore Falls, Ashness Bridge, Watendlath (excellent place to stop for coffee and flapjack), Castle Crag, Bowderstone, and Derwentwater. There's an excellent walk around its shores and if you get tired you can always hop on a motor launch to finish your walk.
