“Oh Dear!!!!!!! :(”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

Its all very well saying you get what you pay for...but that's no excuse for not providing clean, comfortable rooms, with functional facilities. On the face of it things look ok, but look closer and the place is in dire need of a deep clean and some of the staff need to visit a charm school. I didn't have a comfortable check-in, as a light sleeper, I asked for a quiet room only to be asked, how light a sleeper I was and whether my bag was heavy. I was told, if I come down and thump them with it, I'd get one back! What a welcome!! Onto the room...

Second floor, single room. Oppressively hot, with a scalding radiator and no means of turning it off. I had to keep the window open all night even though it was frosty outside, just for some fresh air. Quiet room? Could hear the lift going up and down and there was an extractor outside the window at the back overlooking the car park, so not exactly. Carpets? No stains but bits of paper & crumbs around the edges. Crumbs on bedside table. Single bed clean & comfortable. Bathroom? Grime and dirt around the taps, I scraped off with my fingernail. Under the sink bowl was coated in caked on soap, drips & other detritus. Brown stains on the tiles behind the toilet. The shower wouldn't work and the cold bath tap wouldn't turn. I had to run a bath and go downstairs for an hour to eat, while I waited for the water to cool down. When I eventually retired for the night, I zonked out on top of the duvet as the room was so hot. At 3.15am I wanted to use the bathroom but the door had locked from the inside. I went to ring reception, but the phone was broken. I had to get dressed and look for help downstairs. A staff member quickly came to the room, stepped back and booted the bathroom door 3 times to open it, kicking the lock off, I felt like a nuisance. The remainder of my night was restful and I did sleep well.

Bar staff were friendly and a young chap on reception was very helpful, chatty & pleasant. The car park to the rear, although large, didn't feel safe somehow and I wasn't happy leaving an expensive motor overnight. Incidentally there is a notice on the front door saying the doors are locked at midnight for security? They were open when I went down at 3.15am, so not that secure.

Having said all of this...the hotel is on a main road, in a residential area and is handy for where I was doing business. I have business next weekend and would stay again, even in the same room, if the problems were fixed and the initial welcome wasn't as rude!

“Get what you pay for”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

I paid on average £18 per night. This was a staging post to visit local area. I think its more suitable for urgent short stays or airport transit. I would not recommend it for a holiday. The hotel is very dated and been left behind in terms of standards. I was suprised to see the hotel uses keys. I was even more suprised to note an old slam door lift still in use. I thought it was for display!! Clearly in its heyday the hotel would have been amazing. Its been very neglected over the years. I stayed in room 71 its inadvisable to stay there or opposite in 72. Both rooms are located by a set of doors leading to other part of hotel. I was woken up countless times from the doors slamming. Particularly on friday when ppl have had some beers. In addition there is a staff store cupboard where they tend to congregate. Basically you wont get much peace and quiet in those room. The view out of 71 is overgrown and awful. You will also have to specify explicitly if you need anything clean. Sad to say its not a given for housekeeping. Overall if ur patient and need something basic its ok, not hotely at all! Good chips.

“Not that bad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

This hotel gets a lot of bad press, not least from any of the Stockport locals we mentioned it to. However, we thought it was exactly what we would expect considering the price we paid (£39 for 2 nights!). It is clean, warm and a place to lay your head at night. The rooms are pretty shabby, the furniture is very dated and the shower was quite poorly attached to the wall but no big issues. We found the staff very helpful as they both provided us with an iron and board and came very quickly to sort out an issue where we had locked ourselves out. My only real issue with the hotel is that the walls are very thin and we were unlucky enough to have some very noisy neighbours chatting and laughing loudly at 1am so bring your earplugs. Because of that we slept badly one of the nights.
We did speak to others staying at the hotel and one friend's room smelled of damp and another friend found that there had been a leak onto the bed so would suggest you get there and inspect your room and ask to move if it doesn't look good. Our room was fine (226) so maybe ask for that.
Basically this is not a great hotel but neither is it completely awful. If you need to save cash and don't mind roughing it a bit then this could be the place for you.

Room Tip: Room 226 is at the end of the corridor and seemed in better condition than some others in the hotel.

Dear Guest, lets start with the facts regard tittle tattle from local people. The hotel had a well publicised problem more than 5 years ago under a different regime. Since then we have come a long way and so has the overall product of the hotel, although it still needs work as in any other business. Only 4 bedrooms out of 187 remain that haven't been decorated or totally refurbished and redecorated. We have some very nice deluxe rooms with flat screen TVs. 4-poster rooms, standard refurbished bedrooms and others that are more of a budget market, but a redecorated, perfectly serviceable and most have new beds placed in them in the last year. 226, is one of the latter. My apologies that other were noisy and disturbed you. I’m sure you can appreciate that unless we are informed of a disturbance, its beyond our control.

Thank you for your positive comments. If you return to the hotel in the future, perhaps you may wish to consider an upgrade, which would not cost a great deal more.

“I had to stop the staff from shouting at me when I asked calmly about airport parking”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

I booked this through holiday extras. There was a mistake in the booking as we had puchased it to include parking but the hotel knew nothing about our parking. When we arrived the staff had no idea where the "secure car park" was (despite our instructions saying the hotel would give us directions and a voucher for the car park). Instead of apologising and trying to help they started becoming confronational (despite me saying "this must be a mistake from holiday extras what should be do?" calmly and politely) shouting at us and saying we were stupid for booking it like that. How were we supposed to know?!
Mr Kelleher and his team (night of 20th Jan room 279) were unhelpful from the moment we arrrived and made us feel very unwelcome. They didn't direct us to the rooms, meaning we had to carry cases up stair cases and the long way around. The room itself was disgusting and noisy (we were glad we were only staying for 4 hours before our flight). People were smoking in the corridors (without the smoke alarm going off). The hotel car park looked a bit shady and the conversations I overheard in the bar (behind bars for security) included "my claim to fame was I knew the bloke that stabbed him". Enough said. Don't stay there.

Dear Guest. I am well aware of this complaint as I have already sent comments into the agent. Quite simply, the error is nothing to do with the Hotel however we tried our best to help at the time. The facts are as follows. On arrival the client had paperwork from the agent stating that we had vouchers for a secured car park. That is not he case and we have never operated like that. Most of our bookings on fly-drive involve our own package including car parking which is reserved at a sister hotel nearby, with transportation from the secure car park to the airport included. Despite this, we printed out two maps, with written directions to the appropriate secure car park that we believe the arrangements were made for. The gentlemen behind the desk concerned on check in, is very mild mannered and polite and I cannot see such a situation arising. There’s nothing disgusting about the room and quite frankly for the price paid is extremely good value. On some of our packages you cannot even obtain the car parking in an airport car park for the price, let alone car parking and accommodation. I doubt very much there was someone smoking in the corridor. It may have been that they were standing on a fire exit entrance off the corridor. All the alarm system is the latest technology and fully tested. Just as in your home, all smoke detectors need to have a certain amount of smoke hit them for it to sound the alarm off. If someone in the next room was noisy, had you mentioned it, we would have spoken to them or transfer them to another bedroom.

There is nothing "shady" about the car park. In 4years plus I’ve been manager here, only 4 cars have ever been tampered with and tens of thousands of cars have parked here during that time.

All bars have some form of shutter as security when they are closed, ours is no different and they lift in an upwards action when the bar opens. Obviously they contain goods which can tempt people to steal, which is no different in any other business. You are not staying in some sort of warzone and neither have we ever had any violent incident of the nature you mentioned, which i can only assume is an overheard conversation from another guest which doesn't even relate to this area.

We are of course sorry that you had a problem in the first instance, however it was not due to any issue created by the hotel. And we attempted to help you.
