“Great restaurant and breakfast, nice garden for wedding reception”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 February 2011

My husband and I stayed at the hotel for a family wedding, which was taking place at the hotel (ceremony and reception).

The wedding was lovely and seemed very well organised. It was great to be able to stay in the hotel itself.

We had dinner in the restaurant with family the night before which, although expensive, was very very nice. Breakfast in the same room the next day was also very good, and included in our room rate (expensive if not included).

The main reason i have given the hotel only 3 stars, is for the room. Our room was very small. It had everything we needed, but not a lot of space to more around at all. The abthroom was fine. I have also marked down for sleep quality because there was a very bright blue standby light on the TV which could not be turned off (the plug was hidden away somewhere behind the wardrobe) and although this might not bother everyone certainly bothered me. We put something in front of it in the end but it wasn't too easy. Needless to say this is all based on the price paid.

We received a discount as several of the rooms in the hotel were being occupied by wedding guests, it was still expensive however.

nothing too bad about the rooms, but expected slightly better for the price/hotel.

“Excellent stay”

I recently stayed at the hotel with my husband on a work dinner I must say the hotel was excellent. We drove into the hotel which had a lovely and welcoming entrance we parked right at the front of the hotel. We struggled to tell the difference between the reception entrance and the function room entrance but soon found the correct one. We were greeted by a friendly receptionist who was welcoming and gave us directions to our room (we were not in the main hotel) we were directed to the cottage area of the hotel which was not in the main hotel. The initial feeling was why do we have to walk back outside with our heavy bags and into the cold however when we got to the cottage entrance this was soon forgotted. Maybe a little help could have been offered with bags but only a small point.
We let ourselves into the cottage with the room key and we were then met by some stairs and another room which was ours for the evening. We entered the room and all i can say is jaw dropping classic, elegant, perfect the room was so clean and modern. We had a lovely nights sleep in the extra large bed and the rooms was right near the function room, no noise could be hear but it was very hand for us going back to the room.
I would definatly stay again, anyone who has had a poor experience stay in the executive rooms in the cottage next time amazing our room was the one on the website i guess as it looks exactly the same as the Exec rooms on there.
Also the food was 1st class i will deffinatly return.

“Is this the same hotel??”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 December 2010

I have stayed in this hotel several times and can't understand why others say such good things. The location is lovely, they do a good breakfast but other than that I'm not sure what you are paying for. The rooms are stuffy and old fashioned, some still even have blankets on the beds, the pillows are uncomfortable and once I had to change rooms because the mattress was so old it squeaked every time I moved. On this trip there were over 15 colleagues staying in the hotel, drinking in the bar etc. I forgot my phone charger and despite the vast amount of money we spent, the hotel wanted my credit card details to post the charger back to me. Don't think John Lewis would do that!!

“Staff treat you like one of the family”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 November 2010

Stayed 1 romantic night in the presidential suite.

Room could be considered slightly dated in decor, but as would be expected was extremely spacious with 2 TVs, a lounge, dressing room as well as a fantastic 5-piece bathroom suite.

Had the tasters menu with wine which although very tasty had an over-reliance on seafood and food that was obviously not sourced locally. Breakfast was a la carte and really rounded off the restaurant experience. Ample free parking.

Thought the staff throughout whether it be reception, bar or restaurant was staff were extremely conscientious and caring. The atmosphere in general was ideal for our romantic break.

Would definitely return.
