“Very sad”

I have been staying here about twice a year for some 15 years. It used to be very good with a fantastic Italian restaurant. Now sadly it is a dump. The last meal I had here was very poor but very cheap not what I expect to get or to pay (£4.50) in a hotel, I was the only one in the restaurant a big change from the early years when it was always packed. It is a wonderful historic building, hopefully someone will buy it who will look after it. I won't be staying again until then.

“Quaint - but a bit tired”

Finding this 600-year old hotel is problematic - you need to phone first, as the car park is hidden through an unmarked large archway, all tucked away in the old town market centre. And current long term roadworks have made one significant road one-way.... Free parking, central town centre location. Not too sure about safety of car park, however..

Stayed twice; first time room was basic and really not fit for business traveller. Internal signage very poor - my room was tucked away - hidden, actually, down an unmarked corridor. I look for somewhere to sit at a desk or table, where I can plug in the laptop, watch TV and plug in the kettle. And that's about it. Oh, and have bedside lights that I can read by, without havng to remove the shade... Here there was no room really for laptop; just one socket for TV, so kettle had to be placed on a bed and plugged in elsewhere, not terribly safe. TV Remote didn't work. One light in bathroom didn't work.
I can sympathise in part with a comment from staff about listed buildings being difficult to accommodate modern faciilties - but I am a modern business traveller, and need modern basic requirements!

Free WiFi - GREAT BONUS! They changed my room due to TV problem - next room better, certainly able to have kettle, TV and laptop on at same time! Room a bit chilly, but they have a stock of electric heaters in the corridor... Bathroom had seen much better days, grouting around tiles really quite horrid and dirty and shower very basic. Breakfast quite OK, but had to go to find someone to take my order.

Following week stayed there again - access much easier with prior knowledge! Room quite OK - but WHY do they provide kettles with short leads so you can't pour easily whilst they are plugged in? And horrible soap/shampoo sachets that are almost impossible to tear open once they and your hands are wet? Small bath sheets. I was only person staying there that night, I think, which is possibly why doors were locked when I arrived (about 9pm) and they had no butter for breakfast. However service and staff pleasant. Still needed a heater, but no problem. Just took it from corridor! Creaky floors, so imagine might be a bit noisy if lots of people were in, but didn't bother me.

“Brillaint - wouldn't stay any where else in Wisbech”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2010

After reading previous reviews was very anxious about staying in the Rose and Crown, but found it charming. Staff are effiecient and extremely polite, nothing too much trouble. Food was amazing, even down to being ask what we like to eat and it was on the menu the next evening.

There was four of us and we all had clean linen on our beds, clean fluffy towels. It is a 400 hundred year old listed building, so the stairs are hilarious, unfortunately there is no lift, but that would have ruined the building. At first glance this hotel isa bit neglected, but we are in a recession and it is in Wisbech, personally I loved it. I'm sure if more people used this hotel, there would be money to do it up a bit more.

If you like to wake up in a sterile Premier Inn, then this hotel is not for you - but on the other hand if you individualism and character, then this is the hotel for you. There certainly is character and it would not please everyone, but we all thoughly enjoyed this hotel and wouldn't hesitate to reccommend it to friends.

Obviously the windows are original sash ones, not your double glazed and perhaps if you are a light sleeper ask for a bedroom overlooking the courtyard in the back, as in the front you do get the lorries deliverying in the morning. I stayed 4 nights, and it did not bother me.

Remember Wisbech is a lively town at night and locals do tend to fight quite a bit, but being 4 women in town on business, we felt very safe in this Hotel. And of course we had fun, it really is worth a visit, it made our stay so much fun. You certainly do not get this sort of attention in these chain Hotels. I certainly hope this Hotel keeps going for many more years to come. I thank them for such a wonderful stay. I am sure my collegues will also being writing glowing reports.

“Words Fail Us!!!!”

Booked for one night - Saturday 21st August - via Online Booking but decided to arrive Friday evening instead so we contacted hotel and booked extra night. We arrived about 7.30pm and as soon as we saw our room - 205 - decided not to stay. We went for a wander to see if there was any other hotels or B&Bs in the vicinity. The owner of a nearby restaurant put us in contact with a B&B which could take us for that night.

At 9.30pm we checked out.

The whole of the hotel smells strongly of SMOKE. The room was almost unbearable with the smell of smoke. We do not think it had been decorated since the ban came into being. I found it unbearable and I am a smoker.

We could go on but in short we would give this hotel a GREAT BIG MISS.

“Pleasant old fashioned hotel! Very happy!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2010

I was very happy with my stay at the Rose & Crown! Its a bit beaten up in the bar area but still a decent place for a drink. The hotel itself was very nice. I was met by very polite staff at the reception which were very helpful. The food was nice along with the service. The rooms were very nice and roomy and old fashioned and i enjoyed the history of the place. I also went into the bar called "Tidnams Tipple" which was quite enjoyable there was a very polite blonde American barmaid and had a very nice conversation with her, she did her job very well and i think she handled some trouble that kicked off with a group of lads VERY well. I think the price of the room, food and drinks were very good and a very good standard. Breakfast was delicious and i will deffinatley stay again. All of the reviews on this place are very negative but you all have to keep in mind this building is 600+ years old and is a listed building. It seems to me that the owners and staff are trying to make the place better but things like this take time and a lot of money so give them a chance rather then slag them all off. Every member of staff I met was very polite and friendly!
