“Hotel ignores complaints about unnaceptable noise in the walls”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 December 2010

Stayed here as a late booking vis Laterooms.

Its not the most expensive hotel in the world but for £89 I expect a quiet room that I am able to get to sleep in.

The hotel itslef is pleasant, if a little dated. Staff are friendly. However Room 31 has a constant metallic throbbing noise emanating from the walls. Four calls to reception and promises/excuses that it would stop on each occasion (apparently its the noise of the fan in the chimney). It didnt.

Poor

“Never, ever again: the spirit of Basil Fawlty lives on”

I ahve jsut had the worse culinary experience of my life. Five of us tyrned up at the Ethorpe restaurant and almost immediately wished we had not. One half of the resrtaurant had no heating at all as the extractor fun for the fire was not working. No attempt to offer an alternative table no any reason given as to why an electric heater could not have been purchased. That was the highlight of our visit!

The food and service was a farce. It took an hour for our mains to arrive (we'll overlook
the fact that it took over ten monutes to be told that one of the courses was not available). By the time my pie had arrived I think it had eaten most of the vegetables, the steak was terribly leather like and the bacon covering the chicken was like iron work. Despiite asking for and them asking agin for tea and coffee with our puddings they never arrived. We were not alone - anumber of other tables were complaining.

The worst of it all was that nobody appeared to care - very very disappointing.

Gerrard's Cross? I was fuming

“Gone seriously downhill”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2010

I've stayed in the Ethorpe countless times over the years, and reccomended it to many friends when they are in the area but after my last stay I'll start to look elsewhere! The room I recently stayed in was awful - and for the price they are now charging scandalous! It smelt awful, smokey, musty and as if it hadn't been 'properly' cleaned in a long, long time. Also this particular room had some seriously dodgy pipeworking and only a semi functioning toilet!

“What was happening in the kitchen?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2009

The whole family were staying at the Ethorpe as it was close to the venue for my step-son's wedding. We all received a warm welcome on arrival. The rooms were spotlessly clean and of a reasonable size for the price we paid. Unfortunately there is no residents' lounge and the bar closes at 11.30 but that did not present a problem. However, less satisfactory was the food and service in the restaurant. We had pre-ordered food for a meal for 20 of us the night before the wedding. Service was erratic and very slow; the food being of a variable quality. Notably one waiter was very rude to some of the party. The following morning things went from bad to worse. The restaurant was full and the two waitresses could not cope. Tables were not cleared, all hot food was served cold, the buffet was not replenished and service was very slow -two of our party waited half an hour for the table to be cleared and to be served only to get food they had not ordered. All were offered a choice of brown or white toast but then told the waitress could not find the brown toast! My own experience was the worst- I ordered scrambled egg and received a chopped up fried egg that had been put in the microwave. Fawlty Towers had nothing on this breakfast service. In fairness to the hotel, when we complained breakfast was taken off the bill but it did sour our stay and we all went to the local bistro, a short walk away, for breakfast the following morning!
