“Local pub for local people”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

We stayed here for the weekend of the 13th of Jan,

Its a hard one to review for us because the little local pub atmosphere was endearing but lacking at the same time,. We checked in at 2, In to a small but very clean nicely decorated room, We made our way to the bar and stayed there all afternoon and evening, we had a lovely cosy corner next to the fire, I had a ploughmans ... which was ok but the bread was under cooked and when i asked for another i was given a cold hard bun in a basket with no apology, My husbands sandwich was nice, We sat and read the papers drank nice wine and watching the well know locals come and go, The bar is managed by the sons of the owners( Thats the impressions i got) they were friendly and accomadating, We had our evening meal in the same spot.. A great if not small lamb pie and the poorest sticky toffee pudding ive ever had... For the price and location i wanted a fullfilling bowl of traditional pudding, Instead i got a thin slice of cake with a drizzle of Thin Custard next to it.... Even posh resturants give you a lovely chuck of this cake with lashings of custard.
We headed up to our room put the tv on which was terrible every channel was flickery, thats ok who should watch tv anyway .. The kettle was bizarrly balanced under a little wooden table the cord so short you had to boil it there which means it had boiled that many times under the table its started to make the table go black with the damp air and mould. The bed was so hard i hardly slept and the head board creaked with every movement, we had a lovely breakfast and mentioned to Holly (i think) that the bed was hard and uncomfortable and she was so lovely moved us to the four poster room no extra charge, Her customer service manner was great the best in the hotel, We arrived after a day in london got ready went to the crazy bear for a meal then headed back, The bed was a little better and the room was fab... Apart from the fact the bathroom of the room must be over the kitchen downstairs so from about 7.30 all you could hear was talking and pots and pans being moved about. We checked out and settled the bill .. with mixed reactions.... Lovely bar... Food was good in places .. Great customer service from some staff not others ... Clean tidy rooms with a few issues but The Chequers did try to make it a great stay.. Maybe i have expectations above a Local pub with rooms.. If you want a little pub with ok rooms near London... It could be the one for you... if you want a big comfy bed and luxurious surroundings with a good nights sleep head somewhere else

“Always excellent.”

This is our local pub and I can't believe that I've forgotten to review it. Style is traditional old English pub in the fairly small bar area, ie, low celings and beams. The lounge on the side offers an additional bar eating area. The restaurant has just been redecorated and is cool, classic and elegant. There is a large garden for barbeque and outdoor eating in the summer. It is a family run establishment, with the attention to their customers needs that comes when you run your own business. Food can be ordered in the bar/lounge area from the blackboard menus which offer a large range of starters, mains and puds or you can dine in the restaurant which offers a different menu. The bar menu is standard fayre offered in a lot of good gastro pubs, always a generous quantity and good quality. The restaurant is outstanding. Pascal, the chef is always imaginative, bringing his French flair to every dish. The presentation is beautiful and the taste and quality more than equal to some of the excellent restaurants I've dined in, in France but at a more reasonable price. The staff are friendly and welcoming. My son has stayed here and reports that the rooms and the breakfast was equally up to standard. I just think we are so lucky to have this gem within 15 mins of where we live in the UK. I'm just worried that now I've written this review, it will be even more popular.

“Very comfortable traditional country inn”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 September 2011

We found this inn from the 2010 Good Pub Guide. We needed an overnight stop prior to travelling to Heathrow and we couldn't have found a more relaxing, good value, quiet place within 20 minutes drive of Heathrow (we left 8.45am on a weekday, but obviously you're at the mercy of the M40/M25/M4 traffic!). Food was excellent, room was big, clean and well equipped and being down a country lane it was very quiet. Huge bar menu and quaint old bar. Restaurant looked good too but we didn't use it. I'd recommend this inn to anyone.

Room Tip: Can't think that any room would be better than any other!

“Romantic, relaxing and great staff!”

I can't believe that I forgot to review this hotel and restaurant following our stay last December, especially as we thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
We had dinner there on Christmas Eve and then, on the spur of the moment, decided to stay the night.
The dinner was fantastic value. Very reasonable price and great menu with a fabulous selection of wines and champagne (no wonder we decided to stay the night!)
The staff are friendly and very good at their job, the food is perfectly cooked and presented and the decor is reminiscent of an up-market French restaurant.
The bedrooms are fine, not the lap of luxury, but very good value for the price. And the location is quiet and peaceful with gorgeous views.
We'll probably repeat the experience again this Christmas as the whole experience was romantic and relaxing. Oh, and the breakfast was the best ever!

“Lovely place to stay..”

Chequers inn is off the beaten track but has a lovely mixture of the old, cosy inn with a larger, modern space attached for larger groups. A good selection of ales, wine and food. The room was clean, comfy with a modern bathroom. My partner had a lovely stay with a hearty breakfast. We would be happy to stay here again. Enjoy.
