We stayed here for the weekend of the 13th of Jan,
Its a hard one to review for us because the little local pub atmosphere was endearing but lacking at the same time,. We checked in at 2, In to a small but very clean nicely decorated room, We made our way to the bar and stayed there all afternoon and evening, we had a lovely cosy corner next to the fire, I had a ploughmans ... which was ok but the bread was under cooked and when i asked for another i was given a cold hard bun in a basket with no apology, My husbands sandwich was nice, We sat and read the papers drank nice wine and watching the well know locals come and go, The bar is managed by the sons of the owners( Thats the impressions i got) they were friendly and accomadating, We had our evening meal in the same spot.. A great if not small lamb pie and the poorest sticky toffee pudding ive ever had... For the price and location i wanted a fullfilling bowl of traditional pudding, Instead i got a thin slice of cake with a drizzle of Thin Custard next to it.... Even posh resturants give you a lovely chuck of this cake with lashings of custard.
We headed up to our room put the tv on which was terrible every channel was flickery, thats ok who should watch tv anyway .. The kettle was bizarrly balanced under a little wooden table the cord so short you had to boil it there which means it had boiled that many times under the table its started to make the table go black with the damp air and mould. The bed was so hard i hardly slept and the head board creaked with every movement, we had a lovely breakfast and mentioned to Holly (i think) that the bed was hard and uncomfortable and she was so lovely moved us to the four poster room no extra charge, Her customer service manner was great the best in the hotel, We arrived after a day in london got ready went to the crazy bear for a meal then headed back, The bed was a little better and the room was fab... Apart from the fact the bathroom of the room must be over the kitchen downstairs so from about 7.30 all you could hear was talking and pots and pans being moved about. We checked out and settled the bill .. with mixed reactions.... Lovely bar... Food was good in places .. Great customer service from some staff not others ... Clean tidy rooms with a few issues but The Chequers did try to make it a great stay.. Maybe i have expectations above a Local pub with rooms.. If you want a little pub with ok rooms near London... It could be the one for you... if you want a big comfy bed and luxurious surroundings with a good nights sleep head somewhere else
