“Simple and very nice once you adjust to doing nothing”

We got married on Isla Mujeres and decided to honeymoon in Xcalak. We are divers and the diving is touted as being great and we wanted to explore a new part of mexico. Going from Isla to Xcalak was quite a difference. It took about a day to adjust to being so remote, but once we did it was quite nice.

ROOM: We stayed in one of the upstairs rooms with a tiny fridge. The room at Tierra Maya was clean as was the bathroom. Luckily there was a pretty heavy breeze all week which made sleeping much more comfortable, and there were mosquito coils in our room that were much appreciated. Beds and pillows very uncomfortable (quite hard) but i've yet to find a very cozy bed while traveling through mexico, even the resort on Isla had uncomfy beds.

GROUNDS: not much to them, but since we were the only guests most of the time there we had free reign over the hammocks and chairs.

STAFF: friendly, but I sorta felt like I was getting in the way of their summer vacation/break.

FOOD: eh. okay. breakfast is included which is great, but it wasn't that tasty (fruit slices w/ pre-frozen? pineapple, coffee, and some sort of pound cake). We never had the opportunity to eat lunch there, as the cook was never in at that time of day. We ate dinner there once. Dinner portions are pretty big, but also sorta pricy. The food situation was a little odd, they didnt want to bring the cook in because we were the only ones there (understandable) but it was sorta hard to figure out if there would be a cook (food) there on a given day. If they were so concerned I suggest they put a white board in the dining room so guests could sign up for specific meals.

XCALAK: great diving (we used XTC) and snorkeling. Very limited dining, I mean VERY limited. Tierra Maya (not open most of the week), Costa de Cocos (got frozen shrimp on my pizza; food was okay), Toby's (eh, okay, nothing special), and The Leaky Palapa (Delicious!! but only open 2x per week).

In the future I think i'd shorten my time in Xcalak (we stayed 9 days) to 3-4 and then travel around. We did a day trip to Bacalar (very pretty water and the fort was cool) and saw the ruins at Chacchoben (small but neat). Also went to Majahual for dinner a few times, it was a little more lively.

We enjoyed our stay, just don't think it's on the top of the must-return-here list

Room Tip: simple but clean rooms; mini fridge is nice to have

“Paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 April 2011

My husband and I had been here before about 3 years ago and it was perfect. We returned now, met the owners Kim and Dave, and melted in paradise.
The rooms are awesome and there are many places for snorkeling.
Everything was perfect.

Room Tip: All rooms have the best view

“Fishing paradise where time stands still”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 March 2011

Our second stay in Xcalak - first at Tierra Maya. Our days consisted of an early breakfast in the restaurant, pick up at the dock for a magical day on the water fishing for bonefish, permit and tarpon, return at 4 to a beer at the bar leading into a wonderful evening watching the sun set sipping one of Eduardo's margaritas. Kim and Dave provide all of this with the feeling of being guests in their own home. I am already looking forward to a repeat trip next year.

“Tierra Maya is beautiful and provides a wonderful experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 March 2011

My boyfriend and I have been going to Mexico twice a year for 4 years, for fishing and relaxation. Tiearra Maya provides both of those things, and so much more. The setting, right on the incredibly blue water, in a traditional, small, friendly, fishing village, can't be beat. The hotel it's self, is small, beautiful and clean, but the rooms are big by American standards. They provide bikes and kayaks for their guests, but the swimming and snorkeling that is available right off the dock is some of the best. And the food there is amazing! The real charm, though, comes from the hosts. Kim and Dave Caulkins go out of their way to show their guests genuine friendliness and REAL hospitality.

“The place to be in paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 February 2011

Just returned from another trip to Tierra Maya in Xcalak. Had an excellent time relaxing in the spacious rooms nestled so close to the beach and dock. Having the kitchen/bar a stones throw away is more than convenient for snacks, lunch, dinner, beer & tequilla. Had my best fishing trip to date fishing with Evaristo and landing 5 permit in 3 days! Gonna be tough to beat, but Im up for the challenge. Travelled with my girlfriend and mom who more than loved their time at Tierra Maya beach combing, biking, kayaking, reading a a whole lot of nothing to fill their days. Kim & Dave are the most excellent hosts who make your stay feel like your visiting family. I cannot wait to return!
