“A great way to start”

My wife and I had a fantastic time at La Candelaria and wish we could have stayed there a few more days. We had a private room and while not huge was clean and tidy and they plenty of blankets for the cool nights. The best part I would say would be the gardens and the staff. While the garden isn't huge there a lots of spaces to chill out and at the same time find someplace private to play a game or read a book or whatever. Also lots of lighting so you can be out there all night.

The kitchen facilities were more than adequate and they had one of the better hostel breakfasts we had on our trips. Cereal, fruits, yogurt, granola, and good rolls that you could toast and put jam on. If you want something else to eat head to the big market on the east side of town and pick up some papaya, avocados, longaniza or something. Its really a fantastic market and most of the fruit vendors in the big building are open til at least 4pm. Another tip especially if you're on a budget is to just head out on the streets in the morning and find a taco/torta stand (10 to 15 pesos for a torta). In my experience morning was the best time of day to get street food. It seemed like a lot of the food carts and restaurants closed down between 12 and 3pm so just something to be aware of.

The staff was awesome and always had good tips on restaurants and getting around town. The bikes leave something to be desired but they got us around one morning and Valladolid is really a nice city to cycle around.

Another tip on the showers - try and shower when no one else is. You get more hot water and pressure.

“Great little hostel”

We spent two nights here during our three week trip around the Yucatan and Cuba and wished we could have stayed longer. We had a private room but used the shared bathrooms, which were clean, had adequate privacy and spacious, hot showers. The garden is beautiful, with lots of little areas to sit and relax, swing in a hammock or play chess. There was plenty of choice at breakfast and nice coffee.

Valladolid is a gorgeous town, one of our favourite places in the whole of the Yucatan, and has lots to as well as being a great place to head out for the day to other sights. We went to Cenote Zaci and had a great time swimming, and hired some bikes and took the cycle route they recommend up to the Cenotes. I haven't cycled for years but the cycle path made it easy and great fun. The best food we had in Valladolid was in the municipal market at a little loncheria which was unbelievably cheap and the food was amazing. We met some great people at the hostel, its a brilliant hostel to hang around in the garden in the evening with some beers and chat to fellow travellers.

Its really close to the bus station - within easy walking distance, and we felt totally safe the whole time.

Also, if you love Chihuahuas you will fall in love with Bob! (And I hope Kalugin comes home).

“a hostel to be delighted with”

La Candalaria was our last stay in the Yucatan Peninsula. We stayed here for 3 nights en route to Cancun airport by bus from Merida.
Arriving in Valladolid we walked to the hostel as it was only a couple of blocks away, the paths are paved which meant I had no trouble trundling my small suitcase along them.
Valladolid is an important historical town of the Yucatan and a real treat to visit for a few days.
Please remember that La Candelaria is a hostel not a hotel. Don't stay here if you want hotel service.
Our room was opposite the outside bathrooms—which could have been noisy but actually wasn’t. The bedroom was cozy and clean and had a ceiling fan. The managers are very helpful. We had a small ant problem initially but one of the managers took care of that very promptly.
The outdoor cooking and eating areas are excellent. Breakfast makings are provided. All aspects of the hostel were more than adequate—the hammock areas, the ambience, even the dogs.
Of course one of the many joys of staying in a hostel is meeting other travelers and finding out their stories and other traveler news. Like the vivacious young woman from Mexico City and the Canadian guy who’d been pack backing around Cuba.
We ate at the local downtown market area a couple of times and at a good little restaurant opposite the main square. All excellent value for money.
We had been looking forward to frequenting a small restaurant on the same square as the Hostel but they were closed for the holiday season—Christmas to New Year.
Just down from the edge of the square towards the downtown area was a taxi stand.
We were able to share a taxi with a couple of workers and another tourist to Ek Balam and then returned the same way—although the drop off point was downtown. This was a cheap and quick way to get to Ek Balam which is a wonderful example of Mayan architecture and not as crowded as Chichen Itza,
Apart from the trip to Ek Balam we walked everywhere around Valladolid. The sights are interesting and varied from the hallways of the Convent of San Bernardino (architecturally noteable, as was the outside), to the local cenote--Zaci Cenote which was a treat but perhaps we shouldn’t have swum there.
I highly recommend Albergue La Candelaria. This is an excellent base for exploring the area.

“A very good choice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 December 2011

We stayed here a couple of times, both times in single rooms, one of which had the only private bathroom. We found the place very clean, with a good breakfast provided, staff very friendly and helpful, with a lot of local knowledge. Sadly there is no offstreet parking for those who need it, though we parked in the street near the park without incident.
