We were a group of 6- 3 couples staying the week of Feb.25th to Mar.03 2012. We did the Sunquest Roulette 5 star deal out of Toronto and paid $1020p.p taxes in. With the roulette deal you do not know what hotel you will be staying at until a few days before you are to leave but we did find out a whole month before that we were staying at Coba. Seems that a lot of people got the same hotel whether they did the Roulette 4 or 5 star- just the risk you take!
The hotel is most definitely a 5 star resort. Being 1 of 3 resorts, there was no shortage of things to do, places to eat and entertainment.
We had e-mailed ahead to Felix asking to reserve our 3 a la carte meals for the week and requesting to have our rooms together in the same building on the 3rd floor. Many Thanks to Felix, as we got what we asked for. The Mikado ( Japanese ) was our favourite. We had the Hibachi table were Santos cooked our food and did tricks right in front of us. Excellent time and the food was incredible. The other 2 were the Tequila ( Mexician ) where again the food was wonderful and the entertainment, Miarachi band kept the atmosphere very lively. The last one was the Mediteranean rest. where we enjoyed salmon, tuna, steak and chicken. No shortage of choices and the service was superb in all restaurants. The other nights and mornings we alternated between the buffets in all 3 resorts. Found the Tulum buffet to be the better with the most variety. We did enjoy mornings at the Akumal buffet as it was closest to the beach but the variety and quanity was not a good as the other 2.
The beach itself was fabulous on the Akumal /Coba side, where Tulums beach was more coral and not so good for swimming. There were breakers to stop the waves at Coba/ Akumal therefore the little lagoon had many fish swimming along side of you. We did some snorkling right there as well with lots to see. There was also the beach bar called la Mar which had swings instead of bar stools which was really fun.
Coba doesn't sit right on the beach so you have to walk which doesn't take more than 15 mins. or you can take a golf cart tram to the beach and Tulum. They are leaving every 5 mins. Never had to wait long.
There was always some form of entertainment going on at the activitie pools, lobbies and theatres. The Haceinda just outside of Tulum resort has the disco and many shops and markets for buying mexican souveniers. A little pricey and they didnt dicker too much but you could always go to the next store and the price would be different. There are so many bars, we didnt get to them all. Service was always quick and it always amazes me that they could remember your name and what you were drinking!
We did 1 excursion booked from Bahia. It was the XPLOR adventure that included ziplining, swimming/ rafting in caves and driving all terrain vehicles. It was a full day and included a delicious lunch. Cost was $130p.p but well worth it. Something for everyone! Only a short distance away so no long bus ride.
Speaking of bus rides- that was are only complaint. Over 3 hours on a bus stopping at 5-6 resorts to drop off/pick up guests. The resort is really just over an hour away from Cancun if going straight to and from. Please learn from our mistake and pay the $160 usd to take a private shuttle to and from the airport. USA Transfer or Cancunway are both reputable. We had friends take them with no problem. It really put a damper on our start and end of vacation. Not the resorts fault though, tour operator really has to change how they do things in this regard.
Even though the resort looks so big on the map, everything is in close proximity. We had building 20 which was 2 buildings over from the lobby and in view of the activity pool. Never had a issue with noise what so ever other than other guests late at night or early in the morning slamming doors.
Can not say enough good things in regards to the rooms. Vary spacious, clean and well stocked. Had the minibar filled everyday with beer and pop as well as chips and chocolate bars. The bathroom is huge with a big shower/ jacuzzi tub. The only complaint would be that you had to be careful where the shower nozzle was pointed or the floor would be soaked before you knew it! There were 2 full beds- not double that were very comfortable regardless of what other reviews say. A sitting area with chairs and a couch. The balcony also had 2 chairs and a small table. Loads of closet space with a safe but you have to pay $5/ day for which should be included in a 5 star property I think.
Fabulous vacation had by all- we have stayed at other GBP's around the caribbean and found this one to be the best. Would have paid more than we did knowing just how nice it is.
