This was our second trip to GBP Riviera Maya; the first time was two years ago when we stayed at Tulum which we loved. This time I had been looking for a different resort, just to try something different, but nothing in this price bracket seemed to compare so I decided to return. While we were there we found many guests who were returning time after time and I could fully understand why.
We arrived at Tulum lobby but were upgraded to a suite in Coba. We couldn't quite get to the bottom of why we had been upgraded but we could only presume that it was because we were previous guests. We were also give a free safe, which was appreciated, and tickets to the Mexican Fiesta.
The staff here are amazing, they will do anything to help you, but we did find some people abusing this. For instance, bucks fizz was offered as you entered the dining room for breakfast, but we saw people demanding full half-pint tumblers of the cava and then taking another tumbler-full out of the restaurant as they were leaving. This was pure greed and so embarrassing to see; the staff are too polite to refuse. The same goes for people getting what I can only describe as buckets filled with beer or cocktails at the beach bars.
The breakfast waitresses in particular were lovely, nothing was too much trouble. I wish I could remember their names but I have been back a couple of months and only just got around to writing this review.
The grounds are immaculate and we enjoyed walking about. Yes, the Coba is further from the beach, but most of the time we enjoyed walking rather than taking the train. With all the food and drink you need a little exercise and you see so much more on foot; and it really doesn't take very long, you can take different routes and explore the grounds.
The beach is mostly sandy and very long if you walk the full length, but you will need to take care and watch where you're walking as there are some rocks/coral just below the sand and it can be quite painful if you tread on one.
We did find a problem this time with people reserving sunbeds, both on the beaches and around the pools. I don't remember it being such a problem on our last visit. If you walk up to the far end of Akumal beach you will find it quieter with more available beds. I don't think that more beds are required as this would make the spaces more cluttered. It just needs the hotel staff to enforce their written requests that guests do not reserve sunbeds with their towels. But again, I think they are too polite and don't want to risk upsetting people.
Personally we preferred the quiet pools to the activity pools as the music and people could be very loud at the activity pools. Yes, there were some people of a certain nationality who seemed to be excessively "exuberant". But "each to their own" and you can choose whichever you prefer. As long as there are sunbeds available where you want them, that is...
You should take care when it rains as the floors, in the lobbies in particular and on the steps, get very slippery. The staff do put mats down but these get rucked up and can be dangerous in themselves. The same goes for the bathrooms - take care when getting out of the bath/shower as the floors are lethal when wet (ask my husband who went skating on it, falling straight onto his back).
Yes, the guys selling Privilege Club do pester a little, but a firm, polite "no thank you, I'm not interested" with a smile usually does it. Just don't get into a discussion on why you're not interested 'cos that's an excuse for them to keep you talking. Typical sales practice, that's their job.
We enjoyed the wide choice of restaurants, and the speciality ones have a sense of occasion (please don't turn up in shorts!). We found that some were better than others but it's mostly a case of personal choice, so just try them yourselves and make your own minds up.
The Xmas Eve evening buffet was amazing, though it was a bit of a bun-fight at the bars beforehand with some very long queues. They handled the meal with two sittings, and the way they handled the huge number of people so efficiently was truly impressive.
We took a trip to Xel-Ha which we enjoyed very much. This trip was also offered as a half-day trip in conjunction with Tulum but in my view a half-day was nowhere near long enough to make the most of all the available facilities. The same goes for the Mayan ruins at Tulum which we visited on our previous trip. Take a full day and take your time to appreciate it.
Would we go back a third time? I don't know, as I do like to try different experiences, but let's face it, it would be no hardship and other places have a lot to live up to. Go and enjoy it.
