“Great location, steps from the beach - Great little Town!”

We made our first trip to the area last week as we were coming down for a friends wedding at one of the nearby big resorts.

My wife and I not being big resort people, opted to rent a car in Cancun, and stay off the resort in the town of Akumal.

We rented what is called a "casita". basically it's a room in the basement that faces the parking lot instead of the beach, however, at about 2/3rds the price of the ocean front rooms, it is quite a bargain.

The room was clean, and had excellent cross ventilation. We opened the windows, and ran the ceiling fan, we didn't have to turn the air conditioner on once during our entire week stay.

The town of Akumal is great, lots of good restaurants, and near to Luna Azul on Half Moon Bay is La Buena Vida bar and restaurant. Happy hour runs from 5 to 7 pm, and most nights you could find us down there having a few beers after a day of sightseeing or snorkelling.

The main part of town is an easy 15 minute walk if you don't have a car. Great restaurants down there too as well as two grocery stores. Although if you have a car, drive the 25 minutes to Playa Del Carmen. The grocery stores there have a much better selection at much better prices.

Nearby is the Yal-Ku lagoon, it is calm and easy to snorkel there, and is filled with tons of fish.

The whole complex seems very nice, the large condos are very nice, as we made friends with others at the complex and had dinner one night in one of their rooms.

Very clean and safe, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone, although I would recommend a rental car. When all is said and done, it's not much more than the cost of a round trip transfer from Cancun, just watch out for the Topes on the highway :)

  • Liked — Quiet location, right on the beach, great cross breeze, fell asleep to the sound of the ocean every night
  • Disliked — Beach is a little rocky

“First time in Akumal”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 April 2008

Sorry it has taken me so long to write this review. We flew into Cancun airport and rented a car for the week. We drove down to Akumal which is this small town situated between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. The area is very clean. I was amazed at how nice all the condos are kept up. We got there after 5pm and there was a list on the office door saying what Condo we had and that the door was open with the keys on the kitchen counter. Our condo was #5 on the third floor. We walked in and the place was great, nothing fancy but all the essentials. As evening approached the lighting was dim throught the condo but it really was not an issue. But the lighting next to the beds was great, that is where we spent most of the time at night reading and watching TV. There was only one TV in our two bedroom condo and that was located in the master bedroom. The master bathroom had a large walkin shower with shutters that opened up to the bedroom. The second bedroom had a single bed and a double bed with a full bathrrom. It is very typical that the bed in this area are firm and not pillowtops but thats ok. The kitchen was fully equiped but we did not cook. I'm on vacation so cooking is out of the question. The living room has built in sofas with pads on the concrete that was desent. The balcony was slightly small. If I had to chose my condo again I would go for condo #8, it has the best view on top floor. The layout is the same. We probably stayed in one of the top three condos on Half Moom Bay. I would diffently recommend it. It does not have a pool but we did not miss it. There was central A/C that was nice to use while we slept only. During the day the breeze is nice.

“Great and consistent”

I have stayed in Akumal many times and when I am looking for a condo on Half Moon bay ( and the Penthouse at the Villas on the Reef is booked) I choose Luna Azul. The condos, especially the ones on the second floor, are outstandingly maintained. During the shoulder and off season, they are very cheap as well - Two BR $125 has enough space for 4-6 people! And the bedrooms are separate and quiet. Would highly recommend this place.

“excellent location”

We stayed at the Luna Azul for about a week in January. The location is excellent. The beach is lovely and the sea turtles were visible from our balcony. The staff for the condo was more than helpful and the rooms were always kept absolutely spotless. The condo itself was rather shabby. Floor tiles were chipped, the ceiling fan in the bedroom had only 2 working speeds, fast and almost off; it also wobbled rather precariously. Towels were discolored and worn, bath rugs tattered and frayed and some pans in the kitchen were dented. The venetian blinds in the bedroom had broken slats and didn't work very well. Lighting was marginal, especially in the living room for reading. It could definitely use some updating.

“Loved the Luna Azul”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2005

Spent a few days in Akumal at the Luna Azul, 2nd floor 2BR cond. We loved it, and as my youngest son stated, the beach in front "looked just like a Corona commercial".
The condo was kept very clean (not easy to do considering all the sand nearby), and was nicely furnished. The staff was friendly and the manager was very laid back, accomodated our request for an additional night without hesitation.
The only knock against it is the very poor plumbing, which is apparently a common problem in the Akumal area due to the poor condition of the local water & sewage plants. Purified drinking water is provided.
Great location, convienence store 2 doors down, romantic restaurant (La Lunita) nearby, awesome "swing bar" and restaurant "La Buena Vida" (favorite hangout for my 20-something sons).
All in all, a lovely place for a quiet vacation. Will return on our next visit to the Rivera Maya.
See: locogringo.com for reservation details.
