“Great place to go to.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Overall I found the resort was excellent. We were there the week of Jan 29th. The food was excellent and I'm a fussy eater. There were about 7 types of syrups for pancakes, crepes, french toast. The room was perfectly clean. The place was full but I couldn't tell because the resort is so big. It was really quiet and tranquil. The beach was nice but not that long. It kind of gives you two types. A really rocky coral part and a two areas with the usual sand. I enjoyed exploring on the corals farther out. It was a little like a Maine USA experience of the waves crashing on the rocks. There are spots for snorkeling. We took a trip to Playa del Carmen about 20 minutes away and that is the beach to go if you want a long walk along the water.
I was in building 16 on the third floor. It was quite beautiful looking just over the top of the trees and basically having some nice bright coloured birds about 10 feet in front of me in front of the gallery while having a coffee in the morning. It sure beats winters back home.
I guess the only thing I could complain about is there was no COLD water on the last day there ( the water would just shut off at the point that the cold would normally come on). We had to bug them about 2-3 times to get us some toilet paper. It took about 4 hours for a guy to come up and flick a breaker back on. They didn't refill our coffee whitener. We were given a measly one sugar per pack of coffee. I regard these last things as really a minor annoyance for the most part. The staff were really pleasant. They don't even bother you bother for tips but appreciate when you do give one. The lazy river was nice. Loved the lighting at night and the beautiful architecture of the lobbies. The pool was nice but they should invest in a bit more variety of music. The exact same songs get a little annoying after a few days. Overall I didn't have much to complain about it. I enjoyed it a lot. I would go back except I would probably just like to try somewhere new. I someone who had traveled a lot and it was here third time there. I guess that says something for the place.
Steve

“Good times ....”

We just returned from a wonderful week at the Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort. The trip could have used a bit more sunshine. The temps warm in the mid/high 80's, but windy and lots of cloudy days. Check in was fast and easy. Abril made us feel extremely welcome and we were off to our Room 1001. I had emailed the resort one week in advance to request a room close to the pool, theatre, lobby, and restaurants. I walk with a cane and can not walk long distances. Our room was great - a huge comfortable jr suite with a comfortable king size bed. (There was no hole between the bathroom and bedroom and everthing worked). The grounds were lush green but not many flowers. The resort was big but I used their tram service to the beach and further restaurants. Ricardo and Andres took good care of me and trams were readily available. Only one driver refused to take me to the beach because he said the tram service was for the "preferred guests" only. I do wish the resort had benches along the walkways so that visitors could sit and relax on longer walks. All the other staff members were especially friendly and had great smiles to greet you and help you. The concierges were very helpful and located right outside our door. Gracias amigo Natalia for your help setting up tram service for me.
Food: great breakfast - loved the French toast and omelettes; lunch in the buffet was OK, great paella on the beach - the best I have ever eaten, pool restaurant offered a nice lunch assortment; dinners were OK to excellent at different restaurants. We really enjoyed the food and show at the Japanese restaurant. Could not get reservations for the Brazilian, and also enjoyed the surf (shrimp) and turf at the Steakhouse. The Cajun Restaurant's food was not overly spicy. The resort offered the Apple Vacationers a dinner that was the best ever with steak, lobster, huge shrimp, baked potato, veggies, and baked Alaska. Entertainment was very good with singers and dancers from all countries. The entertainment runs for two week cyles.
Drinks: I liked reading a menu for the drinks and tried many different types. The Iguana, Electric Lemonade, Peach Daiquiri, and Pina Colada were my favorites - that's a lot of favorites! Modela and Corona beer were served. Our room refrig was always well stocked and restocked.
Loved the lazy river and the coconut and mango ice cream! The beach was different than many Riviera Maya resorts. It was quaint with lots of coral in a cove with a Mayan ruin right there. You could not walk far the beach but there were plenty of places to walk in the resort. My husband enjoyed long walks every morning.
We were told the resort was booked almost to capacity, but we never waited in any lines (bar, restaurants, lazy river, etc). About 80% of the visitirs are from Canada. I think we met friendly people from almost every providence.
We were approached twice about going to a special brunch with a 90 minute presentation about buying into their own method of getting future reservations to all the Sirenis Resorts (Mexico, Punta Cana, Spain, and Costa Rico). We were told they were not selling time-shares. We did not attend.
I am not sure why some people write negative reviews. I do agree - you get what you pay for, but we certainly got our money's worth!

I loved every minute of this beautiful place; never felt so taken care of, and our room was amazing....especially the bath tub! The food was great, the Brazilian and Japanese restaurants rocked our worlds, and the service all round was the best I have experienced at a resort. Would come back in a flash!

“Poor”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

I stayed at a 3 star resort in Mazatlan and aside from the bathroom being nicer in the Grand Sirenis, it was basically the same.
My parents room didn't have working A/C when we got there OR a working phone so they had to go back and forth from my room using the phone. Nothing was fixed for two days.
Service at Grand Sirenis was horrible. Keys stopped working and the concierge made us walk the 15 minute walk back to the front desk to get new ones. Maid never restocked water, drinking glasses, or coffee. There was 4 of us staying in three rooms and we took the coffee from whoever we could so we could have coffee in the morning, also had to start taking cups from the buffet area and HIDING them in our rooms so we had cups to drink from every night. We were lucky if we got fresh face cloths and towels.
Restaurant/bar down by the beach is ridiculous. All of the food is behind glass and ONE person serving it up so you wait about 15 minutes in line to get some cheese spooned onto your nachos and be prepared to wait about 30 minutes for any normal food.
During the games played during the day (water polo, volleyball) the men working there supervising the games were very agressive during game play.
Also, be prepared to either cave and go to a time share, or tell your concierge immediately that you're not interested (and about 5 times again later) because they CONSTANTLY try to sell them to you, even as you're just trying to book your supper times. My dad finally had to lose it on the concierge and tell him very sternly to STOP trying to sell us time shares.

Definitely won't be staying here again.

“SO DISAPPOINTING - NOT A 5 STAR”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

My husband and I have stayed in AI 5 star resorts in Mexico and Jamaica and this is not a 5 star resort. After upgrading as much as we could we would rate this a 3 - 3.5 star at best. Okay, where to start. I want this review to be fair but guests paying hard earned money for a well deserved vacation should be aware of what lies ahead. Just for the record we are usually easy going, not unrealistic and didn't travel with super-high expectations.
We arrived (2.5 hours after getting on the bus at the airport - delays with leaving, drop offs, etc). We had decided, before leaving, to treat ourselves to an upgrade to the advertised gold package. We had to fight for this however because they told us it no longer existed (it is still advertised online and in their brochure). This took over an hour to sort out at check in.
A la carte restaurants. All other 5 star resorts I have been to allow you to eat whenever you like in any restaurant. Not this one! You have to book your restaurant 24 hours in advance and can only choose 3! You book with your concierge who will be ready, willing and able to help you between 7.30am and 7.30pm. Well, be warned, book all your restaurants on arrival because otherwise they will be full or your concierge will disappear for the rest of your trip. We never saw the same one twice! The restaurants are grouped together, are not attractive, have no views at night, share one bathroom facility in the coffee shop (if it is raining you will get wet!). The food is okay for the most part but not great. We don't expect ultra fine dining but we do know how great other restaurants have been in other resorts - again this should be rated a 3.5 star at most. Best 3 are Japanese, Steakhouse and Brazilian. Don't pay for the French and avoid the Cajun!
Bars - okay during the day - pool bars etc. At night limited choice of 2 lobby bars, a disco bar (no thanks) and a bar in the theatre?? Only Corona on draft and no bottled beer at all - everywhere.
Room Service - Don't even go there! Over an hours wait each time we ordered and the food was never what it was supposed to be!
Complimentary wine and fruit bowl - really? Be prepared to fight for it!
Pools - For two of them you need to like the sound of loud music, pool games, etc. One is a lazy river (nice actually). The horseshoe shaped pool is nice too.
Beach - I liked it - lots of people didn't. More like a cove. No stretch of beach as such. Ocean was warm, bit stony and got deep quickly so no good for kids.
Rooms - Good size but our phone, tv and faucet were all broken. Phone got fixed but not the rest. Jetted tub just dribbled out but we gave up reporting anything else!
Spa - just to sum this up for other spa-lovers - do not expect attentive service!! We got forgotten not once but twice after treatments! Oh well.
Staff - super friendly, very smiley. Shame nothing actually got done about any complaints though!!
Summary - If you have been to another good quality 5 star resort please DO NOT stay here. You will be very, very disappointed.

Room Tip: Upgrade to high floor and ocean view. Do not stay on the ground floor because it will be noisy. Bl...
