“No hot water!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

We recently traveled to Patzcuaro and stayed at the mentioned hotel, from the outside it looked decent. Our first clue should have been that there were no other people there, no one in the dining room, we got 2 seperate rooms, they were on the second floor clean but dark they were okay. We had breakfast in the dining room and the food was not very good. The problems started when we had no running water, we contacted management and were told that the pipes were broken and that they were working on them and it would be a hour, well they told us that several times no water to use the toilet and no water to bathe it continued all night, until late when we finally had some warm water, not hot. In the morning no water again, we were never told that they were having trouble with their pipes when we rented the rooms. We would not recommend this hotel, nor will we stay there again.

“Loved the fireplace”

Above average compared to what???? We spent a night in room 218 overlooking the plaza. A king size bed and a giant fireplace with wood supplied......of course we had a blazing fire...just fantastic. Yep nothing fancy like a Hyatt, but this place was built in 1656...350 years ago....Clean, with hot water plenty and ambience and romantisicm like you can't believe...and all for 600 pesos a night....like about $50 USD.....try and beat that??? I will go back anytime.....Ian Symonds Mexico City

“You get what you pay for.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 July 2006

We stayed here for one night in June 2006. We had been staying at a much more expensive hotel that wasn't in the center, and wanted a cheaper hotel and a change of location.
I asked for a quiet room, and we were offered a pretty room overlooking the second courtyard, with a large airy bathroom attached. But it was the rainy season, and on returning from lunch, we found that the roof had leaked and a cascade of water was running onto the bed.
The desk clerk appeared to be running the hotel single-handed. He offered us the tiny adjoining room, which had no windows - only a door opening onto the corridor. Then he showed us a front room that was $20 a night more, which we rejected. Finally we ended up in a strange bare room on the second floor in the centre area, with doors opening to the mezzanine overlooking the restaurant, and a window opening on the other side to the tv area and lobby. We had to promise not to use the second bed.
We were awakened by the sound of a full Mexican band (Monday morning - national anthem time) coming from outside the government offices in the square via the open lobby, and the sound of a leaf blower !! from the restaurant, where the sole waiter was cleaning the floor!!
Anyway, it was fun to stay in an old monastery. I'm sure our room was at one time the office of the abbot - interesting. And certainly spartan - bathroom very shabby, not sure about cleanliness.
Breakfast was fine, though the waiter was running like a rabbit to serve everyone.
We enjoyed the "comida corrida" at lunch time - soup, chayotes in cream, main course, postre and drink for a very reasonable set price.
Would have been a good stay if we could have had the original room. Wouldn't go back. Not sure if it was value for money.

“16th century monastery: safe and clean but not fancy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2006

Stayed here 2 nights while visiting Uruapan and Patzcuaro. There's lots to see in town, lots to do; easy to get here by bus or taxi, easy to get around. Nice weekend trip from Morelia.

Hotel is a converted old monastery. You stay in what used to be a monk's cell, and it's got that kind of minimalist feeling to it, but it's sort of charming and ancient with little courtyards, and balconies overlooking the central restaurant. Sounds echo around this place, so beware nights when there's a band in the bar.

Rooms are clean but dingy; don't expect any kind of fancy bathroom facilities, it's bare minimum. According to a friend, this is a much safer and cleaner hotel than others she tried in Patzcuaro. Rooms on lowest level are pretty dark (with dark wood trim).

Hotel is on one of the many squares in town, with nice cafes, restaurants, and little shops. There are music and dancing exhibits on the weekends in summer; you can easily and safely walk around town.

This hotel, and many other places in Patzcuaro, don't take credit cards; there are lots of ATMs available close by, and be prepared to pay cash for almost everything. There is an Internet cafe on the square.

Address is Portal Aldama #12.
