I stayed a La Casa Encantada with my 19 year old nephew in January 2012. I can't really overemphasize how lovely it was there, an island of consonant colors and textures and animals and plants, conscientious and kind. We stayed in the Studio Room, which was absolutely wonderful. Really peaceful and full of light by day, up on the second floor and so quiet. Lozenges of sunlight, one of them oval, moving around the room as time changed, highlighting different paintings and sections of honey-and-lime-pulp green plaster walls and polished wood floors --old wood floors-- and colorful woven rugs. Some of the house cats and little house dogs would visit and entertain, the cats sometimes via the clay roof ledges outside and gliding thru the windows. Since my nephew and I love nice animals this was a treat, as when you're traveling you can sometimes miss that, in big hotels, etc, feeling like you are in a cold dream where no animals (even you) are really allowed and belong there. A Peaceable Kingdom.
But if you don't like a cat or dog in your world, don't worry, the exquisite owners and hosts are really sensitive to peoples' differing feeling about that, and are careful to make you comfortable, according to your style. We just thought it was fun, and all the animals were wonderful and well behaved, too intelligent to bother anyone.
The scale of the place reminded me of certain little European hotels in a Henry James or E. M. Forster novel. The breakfasts were really fun and delicious. The staff made sure you were pampered and warm and well fed. The chance meetings with other guests were interesting, or if you preferred, ignorable. I sometimes avoid a B & B environment because I'm afraid of a possible loss of privacy, but the guests who gravitate to La Casa Encantanda seem to understand how special it is to be there, and respect their accidental companions if only for their shared luck in being part of beautiful scene.
In January, night in Patzcuaro is chilly, and we loved the gas fireplace of the Studio Room. The flames cast great light and warmed the room. So night was as calm in its own way as day inside there. The beds were big and dreamy. We could have stayed in that room a long, long time. And part of the charm of that room as well are the nearby balconies and landings overlooking the courtyards, with comfortable tables and chairs where we could sit and read and talk and have a beer or wine and see the bright blue Mexican sky above the clay roofs, and admire the lovely art and flowers that fill La Casa above and below.
A place like this is the result of vision and care. Cynthia, Victoria, and Luis did us innumerable kindnesses, before, during, and after our literal stay. They are cool, loving, and sensitive people. This place is ruled by a strong hope and love for the power of the senses, and an admirable, intelligent will in pursuing a dream until it clicks into undeniable focus. They should be proud. You will make yourself happy if you see what it's like for yourself.
